| My horse will be on previcox for at least a month continuously, maybe longer. I asked my vet about using omeprazole product just in case of ulcers. It was her opinion that it was not necessary like with Bute. I have a jar of ulcer cure OTC ready to go but don't want to waste it either. What do you think? |

Location: Nebraska | I don't think it's necessary. Previcox is a cox 2 inhibitor so it doesn't affect the stomach lining like Bute and other NSAIDS do. |

Location: Muskogee, OK | Previcox (firocoxib) is a more selective COX inhibitor than bute is. Your vet is correct, you do not need to dose with omeprazole as it will not have the same GI effects as other less selective NSAID's such as bute or banamine. But if it will make you feel better it's not going to hurt! |

When I had my colt on Previcox for 2 weeks, the vet suggested I put him on ulcer guard as well. |

While it's true that its not exactly in the same class as bute or banamine (COX1), firocoxib (COX2) most certainly can have GI effects just like bute and banamine. It's entirely dependent on the horse and how sensitive the horse is to NSAID use.
If your horse has a particularly sensitive stomach, I would absolutely use an ulcer preventative while using Previcox. |

Yep. It can most definitely cause ulcers. It is not as harsh as bute but it depends on the horse and how long the horse is on it. |

Location: North Dakota | I've had my horse on Previcox since about April and even though they tell you that it is easier on the stomach I'm thinking I want to run some Ulcercure OTC through him. Maybe its the stress of training and hauling or the Previcox I'm not sure, but he is showing some signs to me that maybe he could benefit from a tub. I don't think it can hurt your horse to run a tub through him. |
