An Abscess... In The Fetlock??

I went to ride my horse today to get ready for this weekends rodeos. His right front leg is swollen... really badly. And is very hot to the touch. He is limping, but putting pressure on it and standing on it slightly. I picked his leg up, and there was TONS of pus that looked like had drained out of an open spot on the back of his fetlock/ ankle area. I squeezed and more came out.
I took him and sprayed cold water on his leg for about 10-15 minutes. He wanted NOTHING to do with putting his leg in the bucket to soak with Epsom salt.
I also noticed on his hoof, around where his heel is, there is a split in his heel. I have never seen anything like this before. I didn't take any pictures... I was to much of a wreck.
I called some vets and no one was able to come out tonight. I have one coming out tomorrow afternoon.. Its the best I could do.
I probably sound like a bad horse owner, but I didn't give him bute. Last month when he had an abscess in his back hoof, I was told not to. I just figured I wouldn't until the vet came and I knew what it was.
Is it an abscess.... could it be worse? He is my 1D rodeo horse. I am so scared this might be the end of his career.

My gelding bruised his fetlock about a month after we brought him home. The bruise was so bad that it killed the skin on the outside, which then Sloughed off, and was full of pus and gunk. It took a good year of healing through the scab opening and closing, but he's fine. He was 5, now he's 20. He was completely sound after about a month, he just had a hole in his leg. Luckily it was Feb so we weren't going anywhere for awhile.
Yours sounds similar. You'll probably need a round of penicillen. We wrapped with ointment, underwoods and Vetricin weren't around then that I know of.

Is his Tetanus vac up to date? He could have poked himself with something that caused this infection.
