| What are you feeding your senior horses? At what age did you start them on a senior diet?
I have a 13 year old Appendix gelding who I am feeding original safechoice now. He's a hard keeper and this has been the only thing that he does pretty well on. I feed beet pulp in the winter so he has some extra calories. I feed a LOT of hay. I'm thinking about switching his feed to something different..but I don't want him to get hot headed (he gets hot easy.) Any ideas? |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I fed a gelding in his late 20's beet pellets/alfalfa pellets/oats/Purina Amplify soaked am and pm and kept him looking really good until he finally passed this Easter. My dad feeds Equine Senior/beet shreds /alfalfa pellets soaked to his 33yr old mare. neither horse had/have any teeth so hay was out of the question.
I have a old pony now for my son that gets beet pellets/alfalfa pellets/Amplify soaked in the am with 1# ADM Senior GLO. He gets another pound of SeniorGLO in the pm. He has some loose teeth, but does eat well for the most part and looks great. We are guessing him in his late 20's or even 30.
All of these get THE Muscle Mass to make sure they get vitamins/minerals |

Location: Texas | My senior is 30 and he eats two scoops of senior in the morning and at night. He Cabot eat hay so that's all he gets. He also still grazes somewhat. He looks good and has lots of energy. I have tried him on other senior feeds and he eventually gets tired of it and I have to switch back to purina senior. He does not like crumbly or wet feeds either. He still runs in from pasture for breakfast and dinner. Summers are harder on him then winters as our TX summers get pretty hot. |

He gets Alfalfa morning and night and all of the Coastal he wants.
He's on Renew Gold, FORCO and I feed different THE products according to his needs. Right now he is on THE Muscle Mass. He looks great. |

| Tell me how many pounds of each feed you all are feeding please. I have a 25 year old guy and need to up his feed. I typically feed him soaked shredded beet pulp and Safechoice in the winter and he still eats hay but I know he would prefer more grain due to hay digestion issues... but it seems like just a few pounds of grain in the morning won't be enough - but will it if I am feeding the proper feeds? i understand Amplify is a great one to feed. |

I have an 24 year old appendix horse that I've got on Strategy. On one of my blog posts I listed the poundage, etc that I've got him on and have a picture on there as well. The blog is Musings From The Leadrope...

I measured it out at one time, but it was roughly a coffee can of beet, one of alfalfa pellets and 1/2 of oats and 1 lb of Amplify all soaked. I did this for him am and pm and he also had access to grass hay, but his teeth were so bad and missing I doubt he got any at all in his belly. He also got FORCO. I wanted to make sure his digestion was up to par. |

Location: Heart of Texas | What I've come to understand is every senior horse is different. I tried to switch mine to a "senior" diet and he LOST weight. So I have my 16 y.o. on 3 lbs of Strategy am & pm, Omega Horseshine (love it), Majesty Wafers for his joints, and he has free choice coastal all day long. I have a slow feeder hay net that I can put a whole bale in. He's a hard keeper but this works for him. Good luck with your old man |

Location: Where it is too cold, SD | I wouldn't consider 13 a senior??? Have you had his teeth checked lately? Ulcers?
In any case my 19 year old is turned out in a pasture and he gets Purina Equine Senior and Platinium Perfromance CJ and is still as competitive as any horse - he looks great. |

I would not consider this a senior horse either. I would also suspect a teeth issue. Feel free to call at 530 934 9300 for help. |
