If you're happy with the foal do you always bred back to the same or try a different sire? I leased my maiden mare out last year to a friend and the filly is way nicer than I ever could have hoped for she's nearly exactly what I would have chosen if I got to design a foal and her temperment is amazing she is definitely a born broke type. Her sire also has an awesome personality and is drop dead gorgeous and seems to compliment the mare well but he's not really had a opportunity to prove himself in the arena or yet as a sire and his pedigree is so so. I have seen and handled many of his foals and like them all and do think they will be competitive when they reach age but now that I am thinking of breeding her next spring I am wondering if based on how much I like this foal if I should bred back and hope for similar foal or bred to a more proven stud with different breeding? I am not looking to produce a rodeo star and will not be planning to sell but a horse that can be competitive and has that easy personality. The mare herself is a dream to train and gentle and kind as they come

If she had an awesome one with a so-so stud pedigree/performance wise, imagine what she'll throw if you take it up a notch (plus resale value is there just in case). You might pull an equistat magic cross report too. They are very helpful.

We bred a mare to First Down French and was so thrilled with the cross I bred a different mare to him the next year.

We bred a mare to Firewater Ta Fame last year and was so happy with the colt we got, we are planning on breeding to him again next year to a different mare.

So I guess long story short… I am a repeat customer when I am happy with the babies I get, but I like to switch it up on the mare the next round.

Thanks I only have the one mare, well actually I have two but the other I am competing on. If my friend would sell me her foal from this year I would be happy with that but she won't part with her she likes her too much! I don't want to breed back and be disappointed but I guess you never know what you are going to get!

IMO I would breed to someone different but with the similar qualities you like. Otherwise I think you would just be comparing your foal to your friends foal for as long as you have them...

Full siblings mean nothing... My old retired horse was a 2d horse 14.3 on a good day and hot hot hot.... We have his full brother who rather be a western pleasure horse dead head anyone can ride.... They are compleate opposites...... My vote is to breed to something different

In a situation like yours, I would breed to a different stallion. I have my own stallion and have had several sets of full siblings. Some are so alike, you would think they were identical twins. Others are so different, both in looks and disposition, you would think they were totally unrelated.
