We are in the process of building (just finished the dirt work today). The plan was to use traditional granite for the counters, but I was looking at some concrete countertops and really like some of them. Has anyone here done them or have any experience with them? Pros/cons?

My dad is a home builder. He has done many concrete counter tops of every color in the rainbow. You can dye the concrete or acid stain. They're absoloutly beautiful. If we fall into the opportunity to buy the home we're renting, he will be doing our countertops and I would be ecstatic. They are extremely durable, easy to clean. Customizable as far as color and "edge" texture. My dad does natural stone edging as well as beveled, rounded and squared off. They are heat resistant. You can set your hot pans and baking dishes on them. I think its an awesome idea. Highly recommended.

We just built a house -- and have been in it for several months. We seriously considered concrete for the counter for the kitchen in our sunroom/porch area. We talked with a couple of friends -- and with a local restaurant owner who did the concrete counters for the bar in his restaurant -- and it looks great! We learned you have to use a special type of concrete -- it's not the same you would use for a sidewalk or driveway. It entails a bit of effort -- building a frame - and getting the consistency of the concrete "right" to avoid cracking, chipping, etc. In the end, I decided to go with granite -- just personal choice as we decided we just did not want to go through all the gyrations to pour concrete.... I have seen some beautiful counters though -- with imprints of leaves... horse shoes... etc... and stained to beautiful color. I think they would be awesome. Check out www.houzz.com and search for concrete countertops to see some fantastic ideas!

This guy is in my area and can do almost anything with concrete. https://www.facebook.com/foxcrete

Considering it as an option in the house we are about to buy just for the sake of low maintenance and long durability.

We have them in our kitchen and master bathroom. I'm happy with them and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Love them I think the most important thing is to dye or color when mixing that way the color is all the way thur so chips or knife cuts wont matter - lots of info on you tube

Thanks for the info. Sounds like they are pretty good. We are going with the stained and epoxy floors through the entire house. We may stamp the bathrooms and kitchen, but the rest will be stained. The epoxy makes it look like marble and that's what we're doing in the main living area. Stain is much cheaper and that'll be done in all of the bedrooms and hallway.

If you do the stain yourself it's really cheap. If you get someone to do it, it'll be about the same price as high end laminate wood flooring. I know to have the concrete floors done by a professional with the epoxy it's costing us $5/sq ft. The stain is going to cost about $500 for materials and we are doing the labor.
