I am looking to buy a 3 yr old gelding that is Dash for Cash on the bottom and a bunch of Cow breeding on the other side, Colonel Freckles, Smart Little Lena, Mr San Peppy... I want versatility as I like to cattle pen and we own a cattle ranch as well. The current owner says he probably won't finish more than 14'2 or 3. My husband says he thinks I need something bigger to run barrels on, but this little guy is kind of pulling at my heartstrings. I know there are a lot of short horses out there that are doing very well barrel racing, (Baby Flo) Opinions? When I buy a horse I tend to keep it for life, so want to make the right decision.

There is nothing wrong with a short horse running barrels. Some people prefer tall horses, and some short. It's all up to the owner preference

Hi,

I just posted a thread a couple weeks ago about short horses. Maybe it will help. I just bought a short daughter of Frenchmans Guy and was a little concerned about how she would handle barrel racing being smaller.

I used to think that I needed something no shorter that 14.3 to run, but have changed my mind in the last couple of years. There are lots of horses shorter than 15hh that do very well. I think if YOU like the horse and you guys click as far as riding style then why not :

Thankyou!

Oops, sorry to repost the same discussion. I tried to find any previous posts on the subject, but nothing came up, Thankyou for pointing it out, reading it made me feel much better and I think I'm going to go ahead, follow my gut and heart, and buy the horse.

You should change the name of this thread to:  "Does Size Matter?"  I bet you will get lots of responses!

coming from a man!!! lol

I ride a huge horse... and I ride a small horse. I love my little mare. She is gritty in the barrel pen and she will eat a steer up in the roping pen.
