I am looking am horse that has Sacroiliac pain. I have spoke with the vet regarding this, but would like others opinions on their personal experiences also. my questions are:

1. How often do you need to inject?

2. How much do your injections cost?

3. What other forms of therapy do you use to help maintain? (BOT, Magnets, Chiro, Theraplate ..ect)

4. Monthy injectables such as Adaquan help?

5. Fitness regimine.. how do you fit on one that is SI sore. (long trotting, straight lines ect)

This is a finished horse that is running about 1 second off sore. Really on the fence about taking a chance on him, but maybe some of your personal experiences can help sway one way or the other. Any and all input appreciated.. Thanks!!

Mine was injected which helped, but he came back sore again. Massage did him the most good, but he needed one every time we made a fast run. He was later diagnosed with a fractured pelvis that had healed assymetrically. Have your vet do a simple rectal and rule that out first.

Honestly save yourself the time, money and heartache trying to figure it
Out. Find yourself something sound to run, unless the horse is free or dirt cheap. Hindend issues can be really hard to figure out and the bills to do it rack up quick. I speak from experience.

Pass! My horse had a fall which resulted in a SI injury 3 years ago. He was out 18 months until I could ride him again, and then another 6 months of injections/chiro/massage and legging him up. Just started really running him again. Three years and I still can't slack at all with all the maintenance or he starts getting sore.

As for your questions.

I inject his SIs once a year. This year I started him on Pentosan so I will see if the injection span lasts longer.

IA - $400
IM- I think it came down to around $20 a shot per month.

BOT (which I noticed helps significantly), chiro religiously every 8 weeks, massages helped but weren't long lasting, acuscope

Pentosan monthly

After approved to work, keep a strict regimen on exercise. For my guy, the more exercise the better. And make sure he is carrying himself correct. My vet had me put a surcingle on him for the first 3 weeks then moved to the saddle. Make sure your saddle fits him 100% correctly. I ended up having a saddle made for my horse after all this.

BOT? Which BOT product are you using?  I'm not that familiar with BOT but there's several different products, right?

I think a lot depends on the issue they are having. I know a great vet who does chrio as well, and if they okayed the purchase I may think about it. Sometimes it is harder to rehab their mind than it is to actually fix the issue.

My gelding was injected in August of 2013 after endless back soreness issues with nothing else solving the problem. Since being injected, he hasn't had even the slightest flinch in his back and he's running better than ever. My vet specializes in lameness in performance and race horses, he said he should only ever need one injection for the rest of his career. He may potentially need a second, but it's highly unlikely. It took a few months for the injection to "kick in" but in the spring when I brought him back I could finally feel a huge difference. He wears a BOT sheet at shows every night, and once in awhile at home, but other than that he has no other maintenance regarding his back. He's still soreness free as of today, it was the best thing we ever did for him!

Not spending no more money.

First opportunity I have had to get back on here. THANKS for all the replies.  I have the horse for a trial period and currently is wearing a BOT at night. I have talked to a couple different vets.. One said He thinks I should pass.. the other vet said not a huge deal. Around $500 to inject, but they guide it  with an ultrasound and inject in 3 spots on both sides. Does that sound pretty normal? I have access to a chiro on a regular basis, and plan on putting the horse on pentosan as my current mare is also on and I have been really pleased with it!! I am 90% sure I will take a chance on this horse.

What is the best way to keep her legged up?

When I was dealing with the SI pain, all the vets said it isn't the money so much that you spend treating the SI area, it is finding the REAL cause that the SI has pain. It is not normal for it to be the issue, you need to find what is causing it. On my 2 horses it was a broken pelvis, the other was a front foot ligament. You could be dealing with something serious from toe to tail. I would pass on this horse, but it sounds like you have your heart set on it. Good luck, with whatever you decide.
