My 13 yr old gelding had surgery this moring to remove a bone chip from his coffin joint.  From what both vets have told me, its a pretty rough surgery, due to the location of the joint.   What can you tell me about recovery from this surgery?? Anyone have any advice?  I know its a 3-6 month recovery depending on how much cartilage was damaged.  Any info is appreciated.  Thanks!

Bringing this back up to see if anyone has had the IRAP procedure done for their horses after surgery?
Surgery went well, removed the chip, 2 months of stall rest. Took to vet for beginning of 3rd month checkup and still a hair off (X-rays are clean now though) so went ahead and started IRAP on him. Going for 3rd injection on Friday. Anyone had success (or failure) with this procedure?

My mare had a chip removed in the pastern joint area. She had 4 months off. Took her in for 5th month checkup because in a small circle she was still kinda off. Everything I heard was after 90 days she shouldve been back in action..but with my luck nooooooooo she was not. So what is an IRAP? I'm game for any help I can get.

So sorry to hear your mare isnt 100%. I was hope for a miracle recovery also but it didnt happen. Having the surgery done so close to winter has been hard on my gelding also, he is not a fan of the stall rest.

IRAP stands for Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein, its a regenerative therapy.
Here is more info on it, Im not sure if it is a newer procedure or not, but this is the first time I have heard of it.

They had to keep my gelding a couple of days for this. Took him in on Friday and he got to come home Tuesday. They took blood from him in a special syringe (it has little beads in it) and then I think the blood has to incubate for 24 hours... From there they spin your horses natural anit-inflammitorys out and vet said it was better for longevity of the joint instead of injecting steroids or other fluid. ETA: combination of IRAP and PRP were used.

Good thing is they keep your horses injection frozen so you have them at your disposal when needed. Going back for 3rd set of injections this Friday so hopefully we will be back to normal soon, fingers crossed and lots of

If you are referring to an extensor process fracture, my horse had the worst my track vet ever saw.  He was not a good candidate for surgery so we put a bar shoe with 6 clips and a pad on him then stuck him in a stall for 6 months.  He came back and ran for another year but came up sore so I retired him at age 7 or 8.  Track vet said I had a year to run him but if he came up sore to quit him.  He never did develop buttress foot.  I used the Bioscan Hoof Boot on him and it worked great.  When he ran for that year, I put a Natural Balance shoe on him so he could breakover faster.

if you don't mind me asking, what was the price on the IRAP procedure?

Bumping up this old thread. Curious to hear people's experiences on surgery to remove a bone chip on the coffin bone.

I had one removed from my mares coffin joint about this time last year. Surgery went well, she had a couple months off and hasn't had an issue since!
