I have a gelding on stall rest who stocked up for the first time this morning.  He gets 10 minutes of controlled exercise a day, so I'm wondering how I keep this from happening.  I walked for about 5 minutes and wound up cold hosing his legs around 9:30 this morning before putting him back in his stall.

Checked on him at lunch time (around 12:30) and he was getting puffy again.  I put Runners Relief on them (unwrapped) and just checked him at about 2pm and his legs looked great.  I will have to wash the RR off tonight before I go to bed because it's not supposed to be on for more than 12 hours (right?).

What can I do for him overnight in his stall?  Can I put his BOTs on?  Or wash the RR off now and leave his legs alone and just walk/cold hose between now and about 9pm tonight and do another round of RR?

Hmmmm .... what is he standing on? To clarify, what is the type of flooring? The reason I ask is that my mare will stock up if she is standing on unforgiving stall flooring ... she does best with stall mats (1" thick) and shavings.

I would think that cold hosing won't hurt the situation at all either.

Stocking up won't actually hurt him. The more you wrap or put lineament, the more he will become dependent. The best thing to do is hand walk and cold hose and forgiving flooring. Like someone else said, rubber matts and lots of fluffy shavings. If you can get swelling to go away once a day, or preferably twice, he will be more than fine. Stocking up only causes problems if left completely untreated for a very long time.

He's on a dirt floor with hay on top right now, it's probably pretty hard on him now that I think about it..  I try to keep shavings, but he's been more wasteful with his hay now that he has access to a round bale..... Most of the shavings get thrown out with the nasty hay.  I will try to keep it a little more bedded for him!

sounds like I'll cold hose him again and get all the poultice off in time to dry and then BOT him for the night.

On a recommendation from a great friend I went to SStack and bought Equiflexsleeve.  I was wrapping her with quilts and polos but this is quicker.  The only time my mare is stalled is during multiple day barrel races so I don't use them a lot.  They come in cute colors such as pink and purple. LOL   My mare cut her leg bad this summer so she'll always stock up on that leg in particular.

My gelding stocks up just looking at a stall. Lol. I have started doing standing wraps with BOT NoBows and it has SOLVED the problem. Just make sure to wrap correctly, and of you're not sure, get help :)

I suck at wrapping which is why these sleeves are a Godsend to someone like me.

Order yourself a couple slow feed hay nets. Big d's has them on sale for like $6 and free shipping this month. That will solve your hay in with the shavings issue. I have one horse that will eat anything but is such a pig in his stall that he just ruins a bunch of his hay. So in a slow feed it goes every single time he needs to be stalled. Helps a ton.
