I am in my last year of vet school and am currently applying for some internship positions for after graduation.... I was wondering if anyone on here has any experience with CV's (basically an academic resume) and letters of intent (cover letter)?  I am trying to put the final touches on mine before I send them off and thought it may be helpful to get some other non-biased eyes on it.
If anyone would be willing to proof-read and let me know what you think I would appreciate it! If you let me know your e-mail I can shoot them your way. Thanks in advance!

What made you decide you wanted to go on to vet school? A very close friend of mine is in her junior year of college, and has always wanted to be a vet. She did her first two years of school, here, locally, and then transferred to ISU. Since she's been there, it's been pretty hard on her, and she's now struggling with the idea of continuing on to vet school. She's afraid she's not cut out to be one, and they've told her at school that she pretty much needs to be heartless to be one. She carries a 4.0, and is like a walking book - has an excellent memory as well. I'm just wondering, because I'm not completely believing her advisor, and want to offer her all the advice I can.

I always knew I wanted to go to vet school.. ever since I can remember! It was just one of those things that I couldn't see myself doing anything else.  In my first or second year of undergrad I had some doubts (about the time constraints of the actual job itself) and considered switching to accounting as that was a job that I knew could fund my barrel racing and also leave me with time to do it.  But after some long hard thought, I knew I would always wonder "what if" if I never took the chance and applied to vet school.  I actually have a friend who decided the other way in her undergrad years... she was worried about being able to have a family and be a veterinarian.  2 years now after she graduated she is coming back and applying to vet school now.  I think applying to vet school is most definitely one of those things that many people regret not just going ahead and taking the chance on if they ever had intentions of it.

I dont think I'd agree with the fact that you need to be heartless to be a veterinarian... I actually think quite the opposite.  Veterinarians are some of the most caring people out there.  A lot of people are scared off by the idea of vet school in itself.... Of course it is hard but it is not impossible.  I continued to barrel race (and hold part time jobs to continue to fund it) all through vet school.

Anyways, I could ramble on but I definitely always tell people to go for it.  I actually enjoyed vet school for the most part.  One of my favorite quotes that I think applies to this situation is from Secretariat. "It's about life being out ahead of you and you run at it.  Because you never know how far you can run unless you run!"

Her advisor has her convinced that she cares too much, and she won't be able to leave her work at work, and she'll always take it home with her and be miserable. She's also worried she won't ever have time to have a life while in school, some people have told her to give up her horses. It's made her REALLY worried and upset.

She's like you, had always wanted to be a vet for as long as he knows. Now that she doesn't know what she wants to do, she doesn't know who she would be without going to vet school. She's a mess right now.

If you need another set of eyes I'd be happy to look them over.  I am a bit tough on these as to me it's the "First impression" I ever get of these prospective candidates and they can either be impressive...or eliminate the person from further consideration for us.  Some of the folks that applied for the vet position we just filled (Academia/research)  had great CV's and letters.  Others...well I decided if they didn't put much effort into their "introduction"...they wouldn't put much effort into the job.  The committee usually agrees.

I'm pretty sure if I was your friend, I wouldn't allow someone else to tell me what I might do. Your friend knows herself and shouldn't doubt that she has the drive, book smarts, and desire to be a vet. I'd find another advisor and chase my dreams. Don't allow others to tell you what you might, maybe do in a situation.

OP- PM me if you'd like :) I've done MANY of these. GOOD LUCK!!

Yup! I had Dr. Damron for some animal science classes in undergrad. I'm sure he wouldn't remember me as there was 150+ students in the classes, but I definitely know him :)

Hi,

I'm planning to apply to a vet school online. Where can I find any samples/templates of a CV / cover letter for a veterinarian? I found a guide on the official Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine page, but I guess each college has its own preferences as far as a cover letter is converned: they all want to see the desire to study I think, but as for the details, I'm not sure..

Best,

Patrick
