Ok Ive been asked at shows and looked at showbills and still a little lost. Is there a standard set rule for payouts? I know NBHA and IBRA and ABRA have it spelled out in black and white in their rules but what about the jackpots with no written rules? How do you figure out if they are paying correctly or messed up? (which i do alot, mess up that is) Is there a standard that I can carry for reference? Just some of my pet peeves when it comes to running shows and you can not present your payout schedule. Please post examples so I can keep them for a reference tool. Please list any other sanctioning bodies that have listed rules.

There is not a "standard" for jackpots that are not sanctioned by a larger association (NBHA, IBRA, Am West, etc.) Many times they will just follow the payouts used by those associations because they are already written out and therefore, easy to follow and people are usually more familiar with them. But if you decide to host a barrel race, not affiliated with anyone you can set the payout to whatever you want essentially. There are not rules one must follow if they decide to host a race on their own. There are rules most usually follow because of people's familiarity with them but if it's not an (NBHA, IBRA, Am West, Etc.) sanctioned race then it's up to the person putting on the race.

could someone give example of progressive pay

The objective of a progressive payout is to make sure that the last person paid in a higher ā€œDā€ gets more than the first person paid in the next ā€œDā€. In a race paying 3 places, the 3rd place in the 1D cannot make less than the 1st place in the 2D. the payouts are a % of the entries + 100% added money.

1D-30%
2D-27%
3D-23%
4D- 20%

Total payout is $1500

1D pays - 450
2D pays - 405
3D pays - 345
4D pays - 300

More detailed example:

40 entries at $30 an entry with 80% payback

40x30=1200 1200x.80=960

960 total payout

1D=288
2D=259.2 rounded to 259
3D=220.8 rounded to 221
4D=192

Thn you pay however many you want to in that D

I think more people need to pay attention to payout when entering. I live in north texas and I see payouts that vary quiet a bit. If I am going to haul and pay fees I want the best odds I can get when it comes to payout. For example I will pick a race that pays 80 percent over one that pays 70 percent. You also have to consider office and arena fees that may be added on the EF. Many times if there are several events on the same weekend you actually have to do the math to see which is better after considering added monies and extra fees in addition to the EF.

Right now I am having major personal problems with a couple of major shows here in Ohio that just refuse to post their payout schedules and leaves major wiggle room. I guess that is why I asked, because I want to be able to provide clear black and white payout schedules if and when I hold races.

Payout can be very confusing. Each show is different unless producer posts nbha or bbr or other association sanctioned it pays to read the fine print or ASK before hauling and entering if you are not sure. Sometimes its not worth your time entry fee and fuel to go. Other times it can be a great opportunity.

IMO you stop paying places when the last place in the 4D makes all their fees back.

Thats why I asked. Some people haul I swear with their eyes closed. I just want to find payout schemes that most agree with and would want to haul to. lol besides 100% to all lol
