Going on 2 weeks post concussion and I'm in the market for a new helmet. I want something that isn't hot and miserable to wear in the Texas heat and humidity. Looking for suggestions. Thanks!

Here is the one I have, and its nice. It's saved my butt a few times. Its comfortable, and stays out of your eyes. I have it in Carbon color and it looks nice. It is sturdy too, didn't even put a crack in it when my saddle broke and I ended up under my barrel horse during a run.

That's what I have. I got the "Allure" color with the little design on the side. I'm still getting used to riding in a helmet, but it's getting better! One brain injury is enough for me

Whoops forgot to say, I also have a Tipperary sportage and I think it's a little cooler in the summer. It has more ventilation. I cant decide which one I like the best yet! Glad you are okay and just have a concussion and nothing worse.

I have a Tipperary and I'm going back to Troxel next time I think, likely the intrepid. #1 reason, removeable liner. The liner in the Tipperary is not removeable, therefore tough to wash and also the layers are separating and they rub my forehead and cause me to breakout.

Other than that it's been a nice helmet, isn't to hot etc.

It depends on the shape of your head.  My head is round and I love my Troxel. I can't wear a Tipperary.

I have to agree with GMG… I can't wear the others comfortably because my head is too round for them… But I LOVE the way my Troxel fits. They have it in different fits so you can pick according to how your head is shaped.

Good luck and I'm glad your going with a helmet!

I love love love my tipperary sport age, I'm on my second one. I agree it would be nice to have a separate lining to take out and wash but that wasn't a deal breaker for me because it fits my head so darn well. Troxel made me feel like I was wearing a bubble on my head and it created some weird pressure points. I don't have that issue with tipperary and I love how close and low it fits on my head. Sometimes when I'm done riding and am unsaddling my horse, etc. I forget to take it off because it's comfortable and I'm so used to it.

It's got plenty of vents to head breathability and I don't have an issue wearing it in 100 + degree heat and the little front visor thing is surprisingly sufficient.

Thank you for the recommendations. I was looking at Ovation helmets and hadn't run across the Tipperary's. I can't remember what I had before but I didn't like it. It might have been a Troxel.

I just bought an Ovation schooler and it's very comfortable, I don't even realize it's there.  I don't wear hats, ball caps or anything so it's remarkable that I actually like this one!

The intrepid is a newer design. Old troxels were awful, but I love that one, and it fits great and stays out of my eyes (a huge problem with every other helmet i tried)

I'm sorry about your concussion! Had one myself recently and it is no fun! I HATE to wear helmets or hats or even caps. BUT I have a Troxel and a Tipperary (spelling may be wrong). The Troxel is awful but the Tipperary is awesome. My vet is a long distance rider and she told me about the Tipperary Sport helmet. Affordable and light. You will like it.

I just started wearing a helmet a few years ago. I used to say they were uncomfortable and I didn't have good peripheral vision and I even said I couldn't hear right with it on! I can't tell you how many times I get off my horse and unsaddle and start walking him around to cool him off and forget I have the helmet on! I almost went down the driveway and across the street the other day with the helmet on to get the mail until my daughter stopped me and reminded me. (Have to admit I don't think they look good--wouldn't want to be seen horseless in THAT. But my head is more important than how I look!)

Both my daughter and I wear the Tipperary Sportage.

P.S. My helmet saved my life last year. I fell off and broke my back and my head bounced, BOUNCED, twice, and I didn't even have a headache. My back is a different story.... Now I'm looking into vests!

Tipperary Sportage...in fact I prefer wearing it in the summer to a cowboy hat because it's SO much cooler.

Shape of the head will make a HUGE difference in helmet preference.

Round heads prefer Troxel

More oval shaped heads prefer Tipperary.

There are other brands of course but these both have comfortable well ventilated helmets at a reasonable cost.

My oval head and I LOVE the Tipperary Sportage.

Ovations are great helmets for the price. I personally prefer the Charles Owen AYR8 or SP8 or the GPA Speed Air Evolution
