Location: Displaced Iowegian | Delta Cowgirl - 2014-11-29 6:27 PM I have so many favorites loaded onto my Kindle Fire, plus the King James bible....and several daily devotional books...and I access Facebook, weather, etc. via my Kindle Fire. I travel a lot ..I can always have my favorite books and magazines, my bible, devotionals and can load a magazine or two for travel -- less for me to tote around when traveling. Love it. Most all of my flights have Wi-Fi access these days so as I am flying over Nebraska I can purchase or borrow a book to read.... pretty cool. I had wondered, too, how I would like it since I love books so much... but I love it.
Thanks, everybody for all of the info....... I have been looking at this one....it's on sale for $109 Fire HD 7 Tablet 7" HD Display, Wi-Fi, Front and Rear Cameras, 8 GB or 16 GB Question: Should I look at the 8GB or the 16GB? 16GB is another $20 Also, it offers it without ads? How annoying are the ads? Having no ads adds another $20
The more I research the more befuddled I get....LOL

I would also spring for $20 the no ads. Just be rid of that nuisance.
I bought a cover for mine that lets me hold it just like a book.... if I want to do that. Most of the time when reading a book, I do hold it that way.... for old time's sake I think.

Location: CTX | My hubby and I absolutely love to read. And between us we have several hundreds of them. We both have an e-reader from Sony. I really prefer the feel and smell an actual (hardcover) book. But I do admit that I like convenience of the e-reader when traveling. I have around 400 books on it, all free. Before I bought it I would lug around at least 7-10 books with me.... You can imaging how much more clothes I can take now...

I think a lot of times they're an iPad, I've heard they take good videos. An "iPad" is basically Apple's version of a tablet. Kind of like how their phone isn't just a phone, it's an iPhone lol. So for the most part all tablets do the same thing, but the iPad is made by Apple and therefore you have access to all the Apple apps and accessories.
But other companies make tablets. So if you see someone videoing with one you'd just have to ask them which one they have specifically. Most people that I know personally, have an iPad.

I have an Ipad, have been through several android tablets, etc etc.
I do like my Ipad but rarely use it. I never got along with the droid tablets though i do prefer a droid phone.
I needed something for work that ran windows 8 full version, but was still a tablet. I had been hunting for months, and thus far the only option was a very very expensive Microsoft Surface Pro.
I stopped by Best Buy on Black Friday in the afternoon just to see if the Surface was on sale. It was, only 100 bucks off. BUT....they literally just got in the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2. And I want to say I only paid 369 dollars for it!! And i freaking LOVE it. It does everything I need it to do, and I can put Kindle on it, expand the memory with a micro SD card, and it even came with it's own keyboard :)

Get as much memory as you can. I don't think you can expand the memory on the Fire. I have a Fire and I love it too, but very rarely use it because I just don't have time to read. I haven't even looked at it in 7 months or so. I should offer it to you :)

Location: South of Canada and North of Mexico | I just bought my son an ipad mini from Santa for $199 on Bestbuy for Cyber Monday, if you think you want to go that route, I believe its a good price. I have an old Sony ereader but at the time I had asked hubby for a Nook from Barnes and Noble - it was better than the Kindle when they first came out. I NEVER use my ereader anymore, which is sad as I have about 80 books on there, but there is no wifi and it has to charge off the computer, I hate it, wish my hubby would have folled my list better. I have a tablet and my phone both have kindle apps, which I love, good thing about those as its backlit and you can adjust the brightness level. My ereader I had a cover with a light.

I just hate that anything you buy anymore is just a "throw away"!

That's why I commented on your facebook post and highly recommended an SSD drive. It will save you a ton of headache in the future. I won't even consider purchasing anything anymore unless it has an SSD. Regular hard drives run just like an old record player, with a disc that spins and a "needle" that reads it (eye). So every time you move or jostle it, you take a chance on crashing the stupid thing.

Thanks for the info....I read a little more about them. My laptop, very seldom, gets moved. Unfortunately, my hard drive (and other parts) tested good, it was the "motherboard" that went bad in my HP. (again). Not worth replacing it.

If he wants more usable functionality, to do videos himself and play games, iPad all the way. BTW, I have a Kindle Fire, a regular 1st Gen Kindle, a nook, and iPad.

Hence the reason I refuse to ever purchase an HP. Seems like motherboards are an ongoing issue with them. And typically when the motherboard goes, it's never worth fixing.
Advice again....watch your power cords. If they get damaged in any way, replace them with a FACTORY cord that is made for that model of laptop, not just a general one that fits any laptop. Defective power cords can burn up your motherboards really fast! Power goes to the motherboard at the plug in port so it's the first thing that gets fried if a power cord is bad.
