Our director asked about different options for year end awards since we've decided not to give away saddles anymore. She always has have saddles but it's got to where everyone just sells them and there not cheap to have made. She asked us about buckles. I'm all for buckles but no one else was. So whats some nice year end awards that y'all like getting?

Love buckles! Headstalls and breastcollars are great too - can do tooled, painted or beaded. BOT or PHT products, coolers (the Yeti ones are super nice), bronc halters, jackets, vests, gift certificates for massage/chiropractic/etc., fold-up chairs, hay bags, boot totes, (cowboy) boot bags, hat cans, saddle pads...

There's tons of options out there! Personally, I love awards that I can actually USE...I would much rather get a set of bell boots vs. a plaque for example.

That's what everyone else said too but no one really had any suggestions. I thought about Gift Certificates but were a large district so it would be hard to get them so that everyone can use them. Unless we do like we've done with halters. She buys 4 and who ever wins the 1D prize gets first pick of the 4. 2d gets second pick and so on then 4D gets which ever ones left. Would that work for gift certificates? Get 4 from various places from all over the district and 1d pick and so on then 4 d get the last one left?

I like custom headstall conchos like from Molly's Custom Silver, or engraved bits like from Show Time Awards.

Classy silver that still says what we won, is awesome. If you have the same money to spend that you did on a saddle, check out Denice Langely to do custom silver conchos on headstalls, belts, halters etc. BEAUTIFUL!

Why not just use a more "general" place like Smith brothers?

That was my thoughts but she likes to support our local leather shops and tack shops. Stuff like buckles you have no choice but to get it somewhere else but stuff that we can get locally made that's what she does.

If you get certificates...It's a smack in the face when you go ask the local people for donations and then use the money at the "Big Box" stores. Support your local tack shops.

NTO is VERY correct.  I have had area clubs/organizations want me to donate money or product but then never order from me for awards, etc.  I don't donate to them anymore either.

I love the back cinch buckle idea! They are sharp and classy!!
Also, Luann's leathers does trophy/award headstalls, breastcollars, and halters. I'd go to a race that we're giving those away!

Ditto on the Luann's leathers or 5 star items!

Also think about this- you have a newbie join your association that has never won a saddle. That is the ULTIMATE goal. Now once you have won one it is no big deal, but that first saddle is a really big deal. This is coming from someone who has won 2 open divisions 2 years in a row and an adult division two years in a row and not a single saddle to show for it (NBHA). The year before I started- they got saddles. Fingers crossed for maybe this year.

Maybe director should present a few options (JMO). That first timer might like the saddle, but the regulars might like an award tack item like a bronc halter, special tack set (or gift certificate towards one), or a pad and then also get a check. Giving the same monetary value would be nice even if it still involved a check plus an item. Buckles usually don't cost near as much although they do hold a special significance. Buckle plus check- well received I bet.

Now 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc would get smaller or more general items as usual (boot set- bells can be decorated for awards too).

I guess my point is for the group to not make it "less" of an award for those maybe getting their first award ever. Just keep the newbies in mind too.

A few years ago, I ordered the year end awards for NBHA KS02, and I gave each member a questionnaire to fill out with their shirt/jacket/vest/hoodie size, favorite colors on them, favorite colors on their horse, what size blanket/sheet and boots their horse wore, and left a spot for suggestions of awards they would like to win. That way I didn't order someone medium red bell boots when their horse wore a large and their favorite color on him was blue. This was the year after I won 3 pairs of medium bell boots for my 3 horses who all wore a large. :(

My brother was youth 1D runner up and he got a pair of sport boots, a brush, bell boots, a painted tiedown noseband, custom braided reins, a fly mask and fly spray.
My 2D champion awards were a turnout blanket, painted bronc halter, belt buckle, PHT poll pack, a bucket of donated joint supplement from SmartPak, fly mask and fly spray.
For 2nd in the 1D, I got a tack set (headstall, breast collar & tiedown) that was custom painted by an NBHA member, a pair of bell boots that fit my horse, a fly mask and fly spray.
For 2nd in the 4D, I got a headstall & breast collar, a fleece cooler (since that mare didn't run in a tiedown and all the other D runner ups did), bell boots, fly mask and fly spray.
I also ordered tote bags, framed action pictures, Sore No More liniment and some other small things.

Other cool awards I've won: cooler chairs (little fold out stools that you can stick a couple cans of pop in to keep them cool - these are great IMO for traveling because they take up half the room of a lawn chair), lawn chairs, saddle pads, and etched glass mugs. Matt won a PHT blanket for being 3D runner up in our NBHA district last year and that's a pretty awesome prize too. I also order the go-round prizes for URA Finals and this year I got wooden TV trays, buckle display racks, and picture frames from Cowgirl's Corral on Facebook for great prices. We've gotten clocks, shelves and bar stools from them in the past too. Another prize/award that has been a big hit with all the rodeo contestants is fleece throw blankets embroidered with the Finals logo. The response to them has been so positive that I order them for every single event now.

I love how the UBRA does their awards - you get a gift certificate to the UBRA Store for $X, depending where you end up. You can apply the gift certificate toward all kinds of things. You can design your own trophy saddle, tack sets, BOT products, jackets, etc. Leaves the options much more open!
