Hello ladies, I've been here for a long time but this is my first question for you. My horse had arthroscopic surgery to remove bone spurs in both front ankles on November 7, and a second surgery to remove a second bone spur in the ankle November 20. He was sound except a little sore first thing in the morning. I never even suspected a problem but decided to X-ray just in case. Surgery went well, and surgeon says I can put him back to work beginning in February. Problem is, I cannot keep this horse quiet. Stall rest is not working for him. Today I turned him out and he ran, did rollbacks, bucked, played ... For an hour. This is our 3rd day with turn out, he was literally climbing the walls. He has not come up sore after any of his sessions. So my question to you is, if you have had a horse with the surgery, how long before you put him back to work? What are the dangers of putting him back to work earlier than February? I know our surgeons only want the best for horses and err on the side of caution, but I've never seen this horse feel So good, and I hate for him to hurt himself by being cooped up. I appreciate all your help!
P.S. He's been laid up before, he was on stall rest for several months with abscesses and several bad lacerations, and NEVER acted like this. He was truly in pain then. But I honestly think he's acting this way because he's no longer in pain.

I would do what the vet is reccomending. You might try Mellow to help him while he is out.

In my experience, every surgery is going to vary with every horse.  The very best thing you can do in the long run to achieve long term soundness is give it all the time required and then some!!.

I just bought a mare that had one removed in August. Previous owner said give her until Feb and had a vet tell me after 90 days I can start legging her up. I honestly dont know what to do..she seems sound but I think I should give her at least another month.

Thanks everyone! The surgeon called me today and said he is probably just fine. It isn't IDEAL to give him much space or playtime, but the chances of him injuring himself are pretty slim. We are going to move light riding up to January, the chances of him hurting himself cooped up are higher than if I just lightly ride or pony him. I was upset and couldn't sleep last night thinking about him. So at 2am I snuck out to check on him, and he was trying to climb out of his stall again. I got him quiet and gave him a little hay to occupy him. Today he is back to his old self. Quiet and not worried about anything. Hand walked today and he actually wanted to stop and graze most of the time!

Cissus quadrangularis can help with healing. It's from a vine in India. Studies have shown it speeds healing of bone and muscle. I took it when I had shoulder surgery. I was supposed to be in a sling for 8 weeks and got out of it at 5 1/2. The surgeon was amazed with my quick healing.
