Location: MN | can a horse get a runny nose after the flu/rhino vaccine? I gave my new horse that shot on Friday and he has a runny nose and is just not feeling himself the last couple days... |

| Yes, reaction to the vaccine. I don't give flu/rhino, know of too many horses that have had bad reactions to it. |

Location: Midwest | Horses can have a slight immune reaction to vaccines, just like people. It is caused by the immune system attacking and basically getting a little overzealous.
The vaccine contains a killed virus, so the horse is not actually getting sick with the virus but feels a little cruddy from their own immune system's response. That is probably causing the runny nose, blah attitude. I expect he will snap back in a few days. I vaccinate for it yearly and only had one year where mine was a little under the weather for a day or two, but I gave him a little time and he was fine.
ETA: I haul too much and I choose to vaccinate... for me, the rewards far outweigh the risks of vaccinating, which are fairly nominal. It's a personal choice but I stand by mine.

DITTO.
ETA - I like a good "clinical" signs after a vaccination as it can also indicate a strong immune response that often can mean better immunity/safety for my horse over the year.
