Cartrophen used to be a lower dosage but now it comes in the same strength as pentosan. Cartrophen is an austrailian company's name for the drug. I was told it may have less bleeding affects because of how this Austrailian company makes the drug, I do NOT know the validity of that statement, than pentosan. Even though I know there has been no hard core evidence to link to pentosan and bleeding.

Pentosan is in the same family as heparin
( we use it at the hospital as a I.V. Blood thinner
).

This is only my personal experience with Pentosan. I tried it this past summer on my gelding. The 5 shots once a week protocol
(or something similiar to that--can't remember exactly right now
), had a very hard weekend of running. He bled for the first time ever. he has never expressed any sypmtons of bleeding at any other time. Nothing! I was giving the shots on a Thursday. Took him to the vet immediately, got him taken care of. She suggested because of Pentosan's blood thinning properties that shots should be given earlier in the week like a Monday or Tuesday if I would be running Saturday and Sunday. This allows dilution of whatever the substance is in it that can thin the blood. They also suggest not using it if your horse will be having surgery etc. As I said, this is just my experience.

Correct, I give it once monthly anyway. Usually on a weekend with no barrel races.

It can have small anti-coagulent effects. I've never had an issue with it, but mine is not a bleeder. I typically give it several days out from a barrel race as it does take time to reach full effect anyway.
Some info- sorry, this is not a full text.
