What are some benefits to saddles that are only roughout leather? I would think that would just make them harder to clean

I think they are easier to clean. I just clean and oil the underneath and use a wire brush lightly on the roughout.

I love roughout saddles, when I clean I use a airhose to blow them off, works really well.

Wouldn't you have to oil them at some point though?

We have a Shiloh Ed Wright saddle that we got in the early 90's that is all roughout. It is in good shape and we have not had to repair it.

didn't know this I just bought one and had planned to oil the rougeout side too. I have oiled the rougeout on jockeys and fenders before figured it might darken it but would be better for it.

The roughouts that I have had were all ready heavy oiled and never needed to oil but I did keep the underside oiled. Here is one that I custom, but sold it cause it didnt fit my gelding.

pros easy to clean, sticky
cons sticky, lol. The stirrup fenders cause my jeans to ride up my leg on my new roughout. I had tall top boots though, so I bought the roper style boots to see if that helps. Waiting for it to dry up some to see if that helps. If I remember right, after awhile that problem goes away. I am not a very patient person though.

I've oiled the rough part of one I own. Let it sit for two days and is good to go. It darkened a tad, but it was super light to begin with
