Saw where there is going to be a NBHA super show there in Sept. Anyone know what facility they might have it at? Also how's the surrounding area? I know we stopped there one time and even the locals said watch your stuff and that was several yrs ago.thanks for the input

It's at Garrett Collosium. Its like Jackson MS or Memphis TN. It's in a pretty bad part of town wich is why I won't be staying there. I'll drive back and forth no further than I am. Make sure to take your own food because I defiantly wouldn't go out in the part of town to eat. BUT I've never known of anyone having problems inside the gates. I'm glad they are finally going to use that arena for something other than there once a year rodeo. The arena floor it's self isn't very big but not small either but the Collosium is HUGE. It will hold over 10,000 people. It was built in 1948 and was in bad shape last time I was there but I was told that it sold back during the summer and the new owners have really fixed it up. I've ran in the covered arena there many times but I've never ran in the Collosium. All my family has at some point so I'm kinda excited. When I sent dad the schedule he said for me not to think I wasn't going because I have to run at the Collosuim at least once. I think NBha has had barrel races there before but that was way before I started barrel racing.
ETA... Everyone that's close enough please come out and support this show so that maybe we can get more people to start having barrel races and more rodeos there. I hate to see this place get so run down. If walls could talk...

It is a BAD part of town. They really had to up the security at our Jr rodeos after a couple of "incidents."
The coliseum is a very small pattern. Some will love that, some will hate it, just depends on your horse.
The dirt is brought in/out for each event, so there's no way to know what it will be like from time to time.

Dang, why do they have to keep scheduling these shows in high crime towns? Jackson was terrible both our trucks and 47 others got broke in to one morning out there and for that inwont go back. Id love to go to the Mega but i wont as long as uts in Jackson. Now I guess i need to decide whether its worth it or not.....id love to go someplace new but dang we work tooooo hard to have our stuff stolen!

There's a chain link fence around the whole area. It's not the safest part of Alabama but I've never felt threatened or unsafe. We always go to that Sonic or Subway a mile or two down the Coliseum Prkwy.

I think once you get on the arena grounds you will be fine but I would never stop anywhere outside the arena grounds.

I've never had issues with feeling threatened either, but did lock my tack up in my trailer tack room, even though I was staying in the LQ. If they use the covered outdoor arena it will be nice if they keep the dirt watered. If they use the coliseum the ground will depend, I've seen the dirt they hauled in literally full of trash before during Alabama Open's state show. If you stall on the grounds, the barns are not too bad if you are up close to the big parking lot. If you plan on camping on the grounds in a LQ and want water/electric you will need to call the Coliseum office in June or July I would say.
