Whats are the ages of these horses? I know derby is older. Do they have to have a nominated sire? What is future fortunes? Pros and cons?

Most futurity horses are ran as 4 year olds, some on west coast mainly are 5. Futurity horses cannot have competed in any barrel race prior to Dec 1 of the previous year. So all horses this year running could not have entered a barrel race prior to dec 1 2014. They do not have to be out of a nominated sire, they can be of any breed,gender, etc. There are incentive programs for horses who are out of certain sires. That's where you get future fortunes, PESI, etc. SO if you have a colt out of a nominated sire and they do well, you might get a bonus check at the end of the year etc. Hope that helps. Oh, derby horses are 7 and under and have no enry restrictions.
