If you plan to go out on the town, 6th street is where all the pubs/bars ect are. Its like Texas Bourbon Street in a sense. Lots of live music ect. Also, if you go out and have the opourtunity, go to Petes Dualing Piano Bar. I went to the one in Fort Worth and it was a BLAST and a unique experience. Have fun and be safe!

I am from Texas and work in Austin, Texas. I would never advise anyone who is not very familiar with the place to go to 6th Street. It is not the safe place it used to be many years ago. There have been multiple deaths there caused by fights. Alot of homeless people hang out down there now because there is a homeless shelter near it. Find some safer place to go hang out and party. Just my opinion. I won't let my son go down there or take any of his visiting friends down there and he's 25 and Marine.

I was going to say also that 6th St has gotten pretty dangerous, besides the fact that it's pretty dirty. If you go I would suggest going during the day.
There are always concerts going on, good BBQ around Austin, wineries west of Austin.

Drive out to Lukenbach. The old railroad tunnel state park is pretty cool. The state Capitol is neat to me. Anywhere on the UT campus is fun--that is probably the teacher on me. Lake Travis is beautiful if it has filed back up

I have been a few times to visit friends. Once we went stand up paddleboarding at City Lake - great fun! Tons of good restaurants. We were down on 6th St. one Saturday night - it wasn't too bad then (this past September). Not my scene - too many people. For an awesome time going out, go to Graham's at Round Rock. Have been there three times now and had a blast every time!

I went to college in Austin 5 years ago so things may have changed a little since I was last there but I'll do my best! Depending on when you're going, you may enjoy hitting up Barton Springs for some swimming or tanning. Town Lake is an awesome place to go running/walking/hiking. Kayaking or standup paddleboarding on Lake Austin or Ladybird is always really fun and is one of my fav things to do.

I always used to enjoy taking my out of town friends to the Trailer Park... lots of restaurants in airstream trailers. Torchys in the trailer park has the best tacos! I remember the trailer park being walking distance from downtown so if you want you could check out 4-6th streets during the afternoon, walk down to first and watch the bats go out at sundown on the congress bridge, and then meander to the trailer park for some grub.

These days East 6th street (like east of I35 further down from dirty 6th) is being revitalized and is full with coffee shops, breweries, restaurants, shops, and just hipster bada**ness in general. Franklins BBQ is also pretty famous. Salt Lick is also delicious, but you have to go to the one in Driftwood. I love the brunch and Mexican Martinis at Trudys!! Whip In is a pretty cool bar in a gas station that I used to enjoy. Hula Hut is down on the lake and has a fun atmosphere.. from there you can mosey over to Mozart's for some delicious coffee/desserts on their outdoor patio. Abel's on the Lake is another fun waterside eating/drinking establishment close to there if you're looking for a nice place to have a beer and enjoy the outdoors.

If you're there around March, SXSW is really fun. All the bars downtown will have bands playing so you can just walk up and down the street and check out live music.

To shop you could check out the Domain! Its an outdoor shopping mall with lots of great stores/restaurants. Not really unique to Austin but fun nonetheless. There are also lots of unique shops on South Congress to check out.

If you want to check out the bars, I've heard Rainey Street is the place to go.... lots of bars in big old houses on one street. Around Austin there are lots of wineries to imbibe at too. You can book a wine tour if you want and ride a bus from winery to winery.... much needed after your fourth or fifth one.

Also if you're looking for a really unique Austin experience, I would recommend checking out airbnb. Its a site where people post vacation rentals. Airbnb has so many awesome places in Austin... airstreams, luxury tents, rentals in restored barns, cabins, modern mansions, lake front dwellings, etc. all for much cheaper than your standard hotel. Look and you will be amazed!

I know this is a lot but I love Austin and think everyone should get out there and experience the culture of the place they visit! Have fun and let me know if you have any questions!
