Try this again.... Meet Oscar -- This is the little jack donkey that we're fostering right now. He was with 2 starved horses (1.5 & a 2 scale) that animal control made them release - see sorrel & dun below. We took them and found them a home.

Then a few days later the donkey supposedly got out and no one was making a real effort to catch him & he wound up in my yard and I was afraid I was going to have a fight. Of course, he's not been gelded, and you couldn't get within 10 feet of him he was so skittish -- found out later he'd been roped and drug behind a truck at one point. He was the scar ot prove it.

So I got every bucket I had and made a "trail" to the round pen -- worked like a charm. Tomorrow will be a week. Although he's still a little leery and not sure, he'll now let me rub his face and I've even touched all the way down his legs. The last 2 days he's been going on the horse trailer to eat. He follows me around the pen when I'm out feeding and brays when I leave. This evening I sat with the bucket in my lap on the edge of the horse trailer and after he ate, he sniffered my head checking me out without leaving.  He still spooks when you raise an arm or something but he always comes right back. He's getting a bit spoiled..... he'll back up a good 6 feet real slow so I can scratch his butt! Then he'll position himself where I can rub his withers. I think he's training me well!  I had told everyone that I was offically now an As* whisperer, but I'm beginning to think he's a people whisperer!

I love donks!  Good for you for helping this guy out.  We have a donk in the pasture next to us that comes up to the fence.  She still won't let me touch her and i've been trying fo almost 8 years, so you're way more of an a$$ whisperer than I am, Fairweather!  HAHA

If you've never had a donkey before, be sure to not over feed him, or feed him too much protein.  They require so much less than horses.  They founder easy.

Thanks for the info! This is the first time I've been around one - had no idea about the protein levels.

I  **really** need to find the little bugger a home! But it's been a good experience for my horses to be around him. They were all convinced he was half alien and ate horses for breakfast! .....and the thought crossed my mind that he might be good practice for cutting/working cows since we don't have any and like to go to settings when we get the chance.....but I really need to find him a home! Or find a free least for two pasture ornament mares!
