At the risk of seeming ignorant, I would like to ask if there is a way to know what size gullet your horse needs without trying on every saddle this side of the Mississippi

No, not really. The thing to know is there is wayyyyy more to consider then gullet. There is flair, bar angles, rock, twist, etc.

How is your horse built? That might help with giving you suggestions on what type of saddle to try....

As stated gullet size depends on how the tree is built......

I have found that the gullet is the least of my worries usually. The bars and the flare in the front. Here is a neat website that may help some. http://www.horsesaddleshop.com/saddlefit.html#.VLwPj9LF-So

My husband makes saddles and gullet width isn't all that needs to be considered. Caldwell saddles has a good utube video explaining their trees and the type of backs each fits and also tree maker Rod Nikkel has some good information on fit. It is the tree which is the saddle foundation...like the posters have said...way more to fit (rock, flare etc...) than gullet width.

Take whatever saddle you have now and put it on her with no pad then feel under the bars with your hand. If it feels like pretty even pressure it fits pretty good, but if it is tighter under the pommel/front you probably need a wider gullet.

If you're interested in a Martin you can call them and send them pictures of your mare. They can help you determine where to start. Three years ago I did that and they sent me a 7.5" gullet to try and talked me through checking the fit and shimming. The demo saddle was a little too tight so they suggested I get an 8". I did and my horse has filled out to the point that I sent them recent pictures and they will be sending me a 9 or 9.5" to try next week. They are super helpful and their demo saddle program is wonderful if you can't get to the factory in TX or a good saddle fitter.

It doesn't cost anything - call Martin at 1-888-308-2386 and tell them you're needing help deciding what size gullet you need and would like to try a demo saddle. They'll put you in touch with the right person, possibly Brian Peterson, and they'll hook you up.
