Thought it might be easier to get an answer on here than digging through the NBHA site! I know you can claim a different district, but can you claim a different district in a different state? I'm in northeast SD, and go to a lot of barrel races in ND. Could I claim a ND district for points, or would I have to choose a district in SD?

Yes, you can claim a different state.  Here in FL we have a lot of added money at our state show and several barrel racers from Georgia choose to run as FL members mainly to get to attend our state show.

You can claim any district you want, no matter if it's in another state.  I am a district director in East Central Mississippi, bordering Alabama.  I have many members from Alabama that declared my Mississippi district as their points district.  Make sure you designate on the membership form which district you are claiming for points, otherwise they will appoint you to the district your address is in.  Or if you membership is current, simply fill out a "District Declaration Change Form" at an NBHA show.  Or a simpler route.... you can take care of changing districts by simply emailing [email protected].  He is the director of member services.

I am going to transfer my membership to LA 01 from TX. The barrel races are closer. I live in TX.

My first year in NBHA I was in ND02 because they had all their runs indoor at Valley City.  If you claim ND as your district you can only do their State Finals.  South Dakota finals gives away a horse trailer, 5D saddles plus saddles in youth and Sr and lots of added money.  Plus its run indoors so weather isn't an option.
