Bringing horse out of retirement -- what to look for at vet check?

I have a 17 year old gelding that I turned out when he was nine because I had decided to quit running. I wanted to bring him back a year ago, but he was a 2/5 on the lameness scale and the vet
(not a performance horse vet, so he wasn't really giving me many options
) advised against it. Had him injected
(he had some inflammation
), lost some weight and got on top of his feet
(thrush and they were grown out
) and he's been moving pretty nicely ever since. I am taking him to get his teeth done on Monday and I am going to see if it would be possible to bring him back as a backup horse. I'll have a regular lameness exam done and x rays as needed, but I'm curious if there is anything else I need to look for since he's getting up there in years and has been turned out for so long. I want to put him on Pentosan or Adequan to help him out all that I can, but are there any other options I can ask about? Here is from about two weeks ago:
