For those who have dealt with EPM, other than treating with the Marquis, what else did you do to help?

A close friend recommended Vitamin E which helped her horse make a full recovery and eventually win barrel races again.

One of mine was diagnosed with EPM last Friday, but we started treating for it the Wednesday before when we had the vet come out. This particular mare lost her center of balance and basically all motor skills in her rear end. Can't walk on her own and has trouble standing still and when she gets down she can't get back up without help. 10 days in and she has gone downhill which is to be expected after treatments start.

Of course I will run everything by my vet before we try it but would love some ideas.

Oroquin 10 for treatment and Animal Element Detox for maintanance. I tried Vitamin E, and think it would have been beneficial, but my mare wouldn't eat it. Magnetic therapy helped a lot for races, and regular chiropractic care.

I agree. Marquis is old treatment (at least several years back). There is much better and less expensive treatment now than Marquis. Idk where you live, but you might want your vet to check out Pathogenes.com. They are out of Florida, but the vet is originally from OK, and she is on the cutting edge of research on EPM. Her treatment is very affordable (around $200) and IMO works better than the older treatments like Marquis, Diclazuril, etc.

Thanks for the replies. We will continue treatment with Marquis since I've already bought the 28 day supply. Thankfully I got 3 tubes for 1/2 price from a friend whose horse was misdiagnosed. I will definitely look into the Pathogenes treatments and will try the vitamin E. Open to other supplemental therapies as well. Thanks again.

I wouldn't wait to start the orogin ( used to be Called Oroquin 10 ) from pathogenes..u can do it simultaneously with Marquis ...it will treat sooo much faster and more effective than Marquis especially with a severe case..keep in mind the damage being done to the horses nervous system is very hard to recover from... also not sure if your vet is doing it but Bute or banamine will help a lot with the symptoms from treatment to help alleviate inflammatory response from the dying protozoa to the nervous syatem...Bute or banamine can be given every day to do so.. vitamins e needs to be supplemented at a high rate like 10k units...platinum performance has a good vitamin e that is pure and for the money is one of the best buys out there...goodluck.. EPM is a nasty disease.

Immune from Equine Natural Care . You want to boost the immune system. According to my vet, that is how the Protozoa gets through the blood membrane barrier is a horse with a low or compromised immune system.

We treated my guy last fall for a mild case with toltrazuril. It's my vets preferred choice and he's used it on more severe cases than mine. Mine was actually the 3rd horse we treated in the area, 1 other in the same barn, and 1 a few miles away at a friends.

My guy has bounced back beautifully. We spent a lot of time doing long and low work to build his topline back up. His attitude about work is better too - I thought he was just getting a little sour at the end of a long season last year, but I think a lot more of it had to do with EPM and being uncomfortable.

I am starting him on THE Muscle Mass as well and having Bob add in his EPM blend. Should be here tomorrow - can't wait to get him going!

I treated a mare in November 2014 - left her at my local vet for 5 days for the tetracycline/ banamine treatment. I had been battling an "unknown" lameness issue since I had purchased her - 3 years ago. It first presented itself as a stifle issue... progressed to not being able to hold her correct hind lead to the right without balking running off and bucking and not being able to tolerate a pad or pad/ saddle on without trying to drop out from under it... long story short I was at the end of my rope and I hauled to KState for an exam to see if a bone scan would be of any assistance in figuring it out... right off the bat the did other testing than the tail pull etc and they said EPM, did a blood test and it came back 50/50 they suggested treatment. So I did.... and I am loping to right and she is holding the correct lead without swapping running off and bucking.... I did also give vitamin E prior to the treatment as I was directed by my vet. It made no difference. The IV treatment was the best money I have spent. I knew she received the medication and didn't have to worry about getting her to eat something or syringing into her mouth etc.

I did the Pathogens Orogin treatment last fall and had a marked improvement on my gelding. We had been injecting his stifles as he was having hind end weakness and I finally pushed to have him tested and he was positive. I do not know what his levels were unfortunately as my vet was on the road at the time and just called to tell me he was positive.

Now this spring I felt like he was quiet right again so I pulled blood and sent it to Pathogens myself and his levels came back 16 32 2 with a CRP of 4. If the level is greater than 4 then antibodies are present and I believe they said to treat if level is over 10? Not positive on that one. They are having me treat with their NeuroQuel now.

If it's over 4 you are supposed to treat.

Diane, do you know if the levels should get below 4 after treatment or do you just look for a drop in the numbers? I need to call Pathogens and ask them a bunch of questions because all of it is really confusing.

There are a lot of other treatments available that are IMO better than Marquis and more affordable. Oroquin has been very successful. But even after they are treated they never 100% get rid of the protozoa. It is extremely important to boost their immunity. Lysine or Immune both by Animal Element are great ways to help them. The Performance Detox would be great to help them excrete the dying protozoa. Also Alcar is great to assist in repairing any nerve damage.
