My high school horse was a grandson of Doc Bar on both sides. (yes, I'm old) He could be very cold backed but that was usually solved with lunging before getting on. He never blew up when running just during warm up time and even then it wasn't usually bad. He did have some not so nice attitude moments..he would bite you if you turned your back on him. On the positive side he could run a very nice pattern and dang near left me on the backside of a barrel more than once. Probably one of the quickest, hardest turning horses that I have ever ran. He was fearless. He would go anywhere and was never spooky about anything.
Would I want to own one like him again....probably not.

Keep in mind that the time you get to db there are 30 names on the pedigree so you have alot of blending on there :)

I have a 20 year old (gs x Doc Olena on top and a gs x Peppy San Badger on bottom-not sure where the buck comes from, actually a little crow hopping-no biggie-lol) that is an awesome barrel horse but just not lightning fast.  Gorgeous turns.  I have had to semi retire him because I just have too many that I gotta get started.  I was out in his pasture tonight and when I see him up close I do tend to miss running him.

I also have a mare that is an own daughter of San Jo Lena and she is a wicked bucker. She is a beautiful black mare but I just don't trust her.........I also haven't vetted her lately so it might be a physical issue but I don't have time right now to even check!

His influence is so far diluted that I find it hard to call any horse Doc Bar bred now a days. Anyway with that being said, I have a mare that has Doc Bar back where your horse has it, and she was/is one of the grittiest mares. She isn't bred spectacularly, and is now old but everynow and then she'll pull a 1D run or two out of nowhere and hang with the best of them. She tries 110% everytime, but she has some arthritis issues that are slowing her down and keeping me from running her much anymore. I still use her for goats, just not so much barrels. Mine is pretty stubborn and if you start picking on her she'll shut down and you might as well quit for the day because nothing will be accomplished. Just my two cents.

I have a 31 yr old grandson of Doc Bar. He was a rascal in his younger days. He was a hotter horse but gave it 100% and was gritty as all get out. I would take another one in a heart beat, but that's not going to happen. He is still hanging out and I ride him at least once a year and he LOVES every minute of it. If horses could smile he would be grinning ear to ear

I have seen some really nice horses by dry doc, and doc lynx I have never heard of counterfeits by these two sires, but these guys are still far back.

I would be asking what the sire and dam are like and have done

Three 4 Luck - 2015-02-23 4:28 PM  The ones I had were either really good or really nasty. The double bred I had was a granddaughter of Doc's Prescription and g-granddaughter of Doc O Lena--bucker from hell that had rather see blood than sweat.  All of them were hot.

My Doc's Prescription would be fine for days and then, wala...nut case.

I have him and he's the easiest horse to be around I own. His babies are so smart and easy to train and everyone I know who has one loves them. Double bred doc bar ( grandson of docs hotrodder and a great grandson of doc olena) and peppy San badger on his papers too :)

I wouldn' t bash a Doc Bar. I would be more concerned with the cross. Most Bar horses are gritty hard workers and most times smarter than many of their owners. Not buckers just extremely athletic and easily trained.

I've had several decendants of Doc Bar and still have 3, including my grullo stallion. They are Super Smart and as Bibs said, in the wrong hands, they could be quite a handful.

I've owned 3 Doc Olena bred mares. They would all get a hump in their back if not kept rode all the time. None of them ever bucked me off. So they weren't hard buckers, since I'm not much of a bronc rider. The latest one I owned also got hot when you ran her. I don't think I want any more of them, not a fan. However, I think there's other lines out of Doc Bar that are good.
