I have always been under the impression that a true roan horse must have a solid base colored face and legs. But my 2014 colt has as much roan on his face than base color, so is he a true roan? He's my first non appy roan (and all the roan rules go out the window with them) so I'm still trying to figure the color thing out.

Bumping this back up for you, do you have any pictures of him so maybe you can get an answer to your question. I have no ideal, but I thought a roan could be roan in the face area or soild. I'm not much help so maybe someone else could answer this for you.
Boy your fast with the pictures, LOL

What color were the parents? Was one parent grey? That can always give a good indicator and help. Otherwise you can send hair samples to UC Davis to color test and they will and send you back the full genetic color breakdown, if I remember correctly it isn't terribly expensive.

Both parents are bay roan, no grey. The dam has the same roany face, and is registered a red roan--but has black legs, mane and tail. Sire is bay/blue roan. Mine is the only red roan out of this paticular sires first crop, the rest were bay or blue roans. Two were out of grey mares and one looks like he will go from black/blue to grey, and the other looks like she may stay black/blue roan. The fourth colt is a bay/blue roan out of a sorrel mare. None of it makes sense to me except the one grey colt... Lol.

Roan is a dominant gene, if both parents were roan, then you have a roan. You don't see many roans that don't have a solid face, but it can happen. If the dam has black legs mane and tail then she is more than likely a bay roan, for her to be a blue roan she would have to have a black face (with or without the roaning on the face).
Edited to add: Lovely looking mare, she does look very much bay roan though not red or blue. Her face especially her muzzle is the giveaway that it's brown meaning she's bay roan, and not quite blue enough through the body to argue blue roan. She is pretty!!!

He is definitely a roan.

A basic rule of thumb is that the roans will have the dark face, the upside down V on their points. It's a general rule, but there are always exceptions.

:)

I think this picture here is perfect of some blue roans.
One has the basic rule of dark face/points, the other has more roaning on the face. Just like your guy you can see he does have a darker face.

Also... How in the heck did you end up with a strawberry roan! :P Super cute none the less. Lol. Someone was only hetero for the black gene and carried red as well.

Definitely roan with those parents. I'm not sure when you took the pictures, but with all of our roans they change colors depending on the time of year.
Very cute colt and gorgeous parents!!
