I can't even wash him because the stink is so bad I actually started wheezing because I was holding my breath too much. He's in a kennel At the far end of the house. My entire house stinks too. He was right next to our air conditioning when it happened and the smell is throughout my house. Suggestions?

Bathe him with hydrogin preoxide 1 cup 1/4 cup baking soda, and a capful of Dawn dish detergent mixed in a 5 gallon bucket of water... My little poodle got sprayed on her chest where the skunk oils were dripping off her... I washed her with this mixture and she got to sleep in the house that night.
ETA if you have a larger dog just double the measurments

Just had the pleasure of doing this. This formula works!! I had to wash a big lab and a big doberman. I used a pair of rubber gloves and wore an old apron over my clothes. I also wiped my dogs down with a rag soaked in vinegar after washing them. I couldn't smell any signs of skunk after. They also make a skunk wash I bought at tsc in case that homemade mix didn't work but it did.

Yep, that formula works. It really is the only thing that works. It is also important to wash them as soon as possible. The longer it sits in their coat, the more it dries and sets in. When you bath them with  this formula it is extremily important to NOT get it in their eyes. You also have to lather them upgood, making sure to work it down in the coat well and then let it sit on them before rinsing for 10 minutes. I always follow up with a cheap conditioner.

I tried that formula and it definitely got rid of the worst of it. I only had enough peroxide for the first batch. I used Apple cider vinegar after that. Vinegar smell beats skunk any day. A little febreze and it's much better in my house too.

That is definitely a good formula...BUT...the two tips that keep that smell from coming back when the dog gets warm or wet again are:

1: DO NOT wet the fur before applying the formula. Put it on the dry dog first and let it soak before rinsing.

2: Use cold or cool water for the whole process. If you use warm/hot water that will open up the pores in the dog's skin and allow the scent to penetrate the skin. That's what makes it linger so long after.

True. Luckily for me.... they got washed outside so cold water was the only option! My dogs got hit the worst in the face, of course so I had to use a small sponge with the mix on their faces bring careful.not to get in their eyes. I let it soak for 5 mins.

I mixed the stuff up in a five gallon bucket and washed him off first with that, cold water. I let it sit for a minute. I rinsed it off with warm. He hasn't gotten wet yet again so I'm not sure if it will come back strong yet or not. But I was able to sleep in my room and he could sleep on his bed. It was MUCH better.

I will have to try this! I was once told to use douche, which I did and it worked well!

It's awesome going into a store needing 10 bottles of it. And of course you always get someone you know in line behind you.

I think I will be giving this a try next time lol

I agree the sooner you get them washed the better... I didn't know about the COLD water thing... BUT of course I bathed mine outside with water from the hose... When Pixers got hit it was right in the chest and the oils were running down her belly... UHG... That was the last time I told her to "Get the kitty!"

I buy bulk peroxide now, my one heeler loves catching skunks... His record is 9 sprays in one year... I'm not sure what his lifetime total is... Also, use rubber gloves when washing.
