I have been asked to be a judge for the local rodeo queen contest.  I'm supposed to ask horsemanship and current event questions.  Got any ideas?

I'm thinking they don't mean current events like politics and such.  The contestants are anywhere from 7 to 23 years old.  I thought maybe some questions about The American would be good since it's the wave of rodeo's future.  Maybe about the new rodeo association?

Thanks in advance!

My daughter is a state level queen and I have judged many contests. First of all, absolutely queens should know about current events like politics and such. Granted, it is more important for the Teen and Miss, and a local rodeo may not be as particular. At the state level girls are most assuredly asked about current events, both newsy and hot spot like political. But yes, questions on the American and new rodeo association would be very appropriate (not so much for 7 year olds LOL). They should know about their sport! They should know the history of the local rodeo they are wanting to represent and the current board. One of the neatest things we have seen asked is for each contestant to give an impromptu 30 second "commercial" about attending the rodeo they are representing. Seeing how knowledgeable the girls are, and their ability to thing on their feet, is why these questions are asked.

Horsemanship questions can be parts of the saddle. What bit are you using and why. Why are leads important. Give them a what would you do if....scenario question. I have seen the girls be asked to unsaddle and saddle their horse. Rodeo terminology is common and appropriate. General horse health. Google 4H hippology questions.

Correct answers are important, but so is delivery and the ability to be able to handle themselves if they DON'T know it. And yes, even 7 year olds can answer these questions.

Here's my list from 2013 Contest:

Queens (19-24)
β€’ AQHA is being forced by the court system to allow cloned horses to be registered with the association. Do you agree or disagree with the concept of cloning horses, and how do you feel this decision will affect the breed?
β€’ Explain what ProCom is in the PRCA.
β€’ What would you do if you accidentally dropped the American Flag during a grand entry?
β€’ Do you believe it is important for a horse to be registered? Why or why not, and if so what are your favorite bloodlines?
β€’ What does sportsmanship mean to you?
β€’ What is the biggest obstacle or issue the sport of rodeo faces today?
β€’ If you could change one thing about America, what would it be?

Teens (14-18)
β€’ What is a major pet peeve of yours and why?
β€’ What does sportsmanship mean to you?
β€’ Who is the 2012 barrel racing world champion and can you tell me anything about her journey to the gold buckle?
β€’ How do you qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, where is it held each year, and who is your favorite qualifier for 2013?
β€’ What would you do if you accidentally dropped the American Flag during a grand entry?
β€’ Do you believe it is important for a horse to be registered? Why or why not, and if so what are your favorite bloodlines?
β€’ This year at the Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo, Willow Raley became the first woman to earn a check and compete in the short round of the team roping in the rodeos history. How do you feel about women competing in the events that have traditionally been reserved for men only?
β€’ If you were granted 3 wishes, what would they be?
β€’ What does β€œslack” refer to at the rodeo?

Princess (9-13)
β€’ Why do you want to be Miss Sandhills Rodeo Princess?
β€’ Having children wear a helmet when competing in western equestrian events has become more common. Do you feel this decision should continue to be left up to the children’s parents, or should it be required by law for all children under a certain age to wear a helmet while horseback?
β€’ If you had a chance to try a new equestrian event what would it be, and why?
β€’ How do you qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, where is it held each year, and who is your favorite qualifier for 2013?
β€’ Describe the role of the stock contractor at the rodeo.
β€’ What is your favorite rodeo event and why?
β€’ What song best describes you, and why?
β€’ What are 3 goals you have set for yourself and your future?

Horsemanship
β€’ Explain what a Coggins test is, and why is it important?
β€’ Horses are measured in hands. How many inches are in a hand? How many hands is your horse?
β€’ Tell me about your bit, and why you use it.
β€’ What are the 3 most important things to know when taking care of your horse?
β€’ What are the symptoms of colic? What causes it and how is it treated?
β€’ Tell me what β€œtying up” refers to in horse health.
β€’ Explain the differences between a bit and a hackamore. What is a combination bit?
β€’ How do you prepare your horse for competition?
β€’ What is your daily feeding routine? Why does this work well for your horse?
β€’ What 3 nutrients are the most important when evaluating a feed for your horse?
β€’ How do you feel your horse preformed in competition tonight? What would you change about the pattern?
β€’ What yearly vaccinations do you give to your horses?
β€’ Explain what a rotational de- worming program is.

I worked with a former Miss Rodeo USA when I was doing pageants and we are doing clinics together now. We play Rodeo Jepordy with the older girls. If they give us the right answer but don't start with "what is.." or "who is..." then it's points counted off. Of coarse we explain that before hand. The last pageant I did the judges asked the young girls "If you could be any Disney Character who would it be and why?" Ask them about there horse and there family or pets but don't expects a whole lot from a 7yr old. We(queen division) was asked about different rodeo events and parts to the horse. They need be able to tell you who is over the rodeo and the year the rodeo started and Who the stock contractors are. We also had to do modeling. I don't know that I would ask them about the new rodeo association. Depending on where you live though I guess but where I live we havnt heard a whole lot about it. Google rodeo pageant questions and there is a few websites that will come up. That's where I got a lot of my practice questions from.

Something else I would suggest is don't ask a lot of the same questions twice. Reason being is I was the last person the be interviewed well before I went in I already knew half of what they were going to ask because the girls before us was telling us. We were suppose to go straight outside after the interview because of this but because it was storming we were all together.

I lost major points because I let my nerves get the best of me. They asked "How many knees does a horse have?" I said 4. I knew when I said it I was wrong and I corrected my self but that didn't matter.

For a possible Horsemanship scenario:

Tell them their horse has a rock lodged in it's off hind hoof and ask them to demonstrate what they would do.

It's been interesting to see how some calmly and safely move to the correct side of the horse and demonstrate removing the rock from the correct hoof with a hoof pick.

And equally interesting to see some become confused and not really know which hoof is the off hind.

Current events to me is know what is going on in their association, town, county, state. I personally wouldn't get into politics espically if they are under 18...and you may be able to be netural to their response, the other judges might mark them down if they support a different view then their own.
What association is the local rodeo apart of? I would never ask WPRA/NFR questions to national omoksee queen or NHSRA...but if the association she would be representing is the PRCA/WPRA then yes those quesitons are great.

When I ran for queen we had a equine virus break out in our county and they wanted to know where it broke out at, how could it been prevented, and how to treat it.
A fun scenario I have asked contestants is...you just got home from school. You have 20 minutes before you need to leave for the weekend rodeo. You walk outside and see that your mom has cleaned your horse trailer for you and unpacked everything. What do you do/pack? I have gotten a lot of "just the essentials" and I ask what are those?
I have also been asked to explain two different meanings of the term "cross fire" in the sport of rodeo.

I'm going to respectfully disagree with you when it comes to asking the same questions.  I always try to ask the girls the same questions to keep things as even as possible.  It's up to the coordinator and committee to keep contestants from discussing the questions with girls who haven't gone yet.  Also, having all the girls answer the same questions allows the ones who really know their stuff to set themselves apart by expanding further on their answers.

I have a whole list of questions that I'll find later and get posted on here.  Don't be afraid to ask the older girls serious questions about current events...at the MRA pageant my current event question had to do with my views on legalizing recreational marijuana and revenue from the taxation of it.

One of my favorite questions to ask is "What size shoe does your horse wear?". I will ask that PeeWee through Queen. I've had PeeWee's answer with the correct horse shoe size, all the way to a Queen contestant at a county leval, putting her foot next to her horses, and answering "About a 7 1/2, his feet look close to mine"...what?!? If an older girl has a different kind of shoe on her horse, bar shoes, round shoe, anything other than a plain shoe, I'll ask her why (even if they have sliders on the hind). I'm a firm believer that if you use it on your horse, you need to know why, esp for older girls.

One thing I really like is when a girl does not know the answer, and say's she doesn't know but will find out and let me know. Extra points to her if she comes up later and tells me.

I'm pretty sure that the girls are kept secluded and then once their introduction/interview/speech is over they join the dinner and watch the rest go.  So asking the same question shouldn't be a problem.

Queens (19-24)
β€’ AQHA is being forced by the court system to allow cloned horses to be registered with the association. Do you agree or disagree with the concept of cloning horses, and how do you feel this decision will affect the breed?

AQHA recently won their case against registering cloned horses, although another request was filed for a different type of hearing on the matter.

I have over 150 questions in a PDF at this link, although I haven't updated them for awhile so they may need to be tweaked.

Make them simple. I was a queen and there is a lot of pressure standing there trying to think so fast on your feet to come up with a clever answer. Most girls know a lot and have studied but your main objective is to see their personality.

Our main objective as judges isn't to see personality, it's to see a total package of appearance, personality (including knowledge) and horsemanship (skill and knowledge). If you become the title holder you very well may be placed on the spot and if you're not capable of thinking on your feet you're not doing your job as an ambassador.

As a judge, start your interview by getting to know the contestant with a few easy questions about herself and off of her application. As the interview progresses add to the difficulty of your questions. An interview should be a conversation that demonstrates poise, personality and knowledge. You can tell quite quickly if you have a young woman in front of you who has done her homework about the job she is applying for or not and tailor your questions to her ability. There's no reason to make them cry by continuing to grill them about information they are clueless about. The last pageant I judged had three contestants, not a single one of them knew when the rodeo performances were, where tickets could be purchased or how much tickets were. It was evident after a few questions none of them were going to be able to really delve into the history of rodeo, current rodeo stats, or in-depth equine science. We tailored our questions to get to know them instead of frustrating them with questions they weren't going to be able to answer.
