Bought a horse several months ago and was told he would rear under pressure. We are trying to find the trigger. He is a 6yo. He did not rear with us for several months and out of nowhere has reared 3 time in 2 rides. so here's some history on him:
When he was owned by breeder:
1. Had one out on the track and was slow- did not run him again and sold him.
Former Owner (who I got him from):
1. Had a pre purchase exam done with x- rays from head to toe, only problem found was a floating bone chip on one knee.
2. He got sent to a cutting trainer and was amazing on a cow- used him as a turn back horse often.
3. He came down with what they thought was EPM and treated him accordingly with Marquis and he bounced back.
4. AFTER being treated for EPM and given time off is when the Rearing began.
5. Sent him to another trainer that was making him a tripping horse, still would rear (only ever reared ONCE in the box) that trainer noticed the rearing most when he was alone.
6. Also said he would do it when he got HOT or felt pressured.
Then we bought him:
1. got his teeth floated
2. Chiropracted him
3. did ranch ridding and occasional arena ridding- never had an issue.
4. Started using him more often and longer periods of time
5. First time he reared with us was when my husband baled on him bareback,in a halter to just play on (hes very gentle and very broke). He started the ride rearing once when asked to leave the herd...
6. Rode good the next few times
7. Reared again but this time MID LOPE out of nowhere and continued loping like nothing happened after while ponying my good horse- was fine the rest of the ride
8. The next day he reared when we rode him OUT of his pasture to another pasture- he was not ponying just easy ridding.
9. Had vet recheck teeth, and he was fine chiropractic also
10. Saddle fits great...
11. WE DID have his feet trimmed and noticed bruising in one front foot.

Part of me thinks pain related, but then at times i think him just being spoiled when he reared with former owner they eased his work and got off... with that said the other part thinks behavior. He has never flipped or came up more then 3-4 ft off the ground but its very random. Hes a very soft hearted, lovable, good horse when hes good just want to resolve this issue- he is a horse we want to keep to replace my husbands 17yo ranch horse. He does not seem like one that "WANTS" to do wrong. The past EPM has me concerned, as does the bone chip as a potential cause, but I know we are getting close to his hocks fusing too and i am wondering if his hocks are something to consider bc they did say he could flat slide and cut decent- now he is very cautious with his stops. Hes so willing but this issue is so random i don't understand it at all. I also have considered ulcers but its so inconsistent.

A few years ago there was an English trainer who bought a gorgeous, grey 17.3 hand TB off the track who they gave up on racing because of rearing. This horse did it to take control of the situation. The guy stayed with him during his rearing escapades, and this horse would rear straight up as high as he could and he's 17.3. He didn't reprimand, just stayed on his back and would go on as if nothing had happened. There were several videos of this horse's retraining on youtube, but i can't remember the name of the trainer or horse, but lots of people were following him and there were lots of videos. Jean Paul ? was the trainer's name i think.

I hope whoever rides this horse has good health insurance, disability coverage and and AFLAC accident policy.

Sounds like most of the time he's doing it involves being away from other horses, at least that's the pattern I saw in that description. He may be just a tetch herd sour and trying you. It seemed that each incident involved either leaving other horses or just being alone and not liking it. I have one that would do this a bit too. He was actually better by himself but if you ride him with other horses and they get too far ahead or behind he will try it.

I have a mare that rode really nicely most of the time.  Very willing and easy to train.  Then when she was 4 she started acting up occasionally….  Rearing, lunging though the air, bucking, etc.  Did all the usual vet stuff and nothing ever came of it.  She finally bucked me off and hurt me pretty bad, took her to the trainer – she flipped over there…  Finally listened to my gut and took back x-rays.  Bad case of kissing spine.  I feel bad that I didn’t take the x-rays sooner as it would have saved us all from a lot of frustrations, pain and money.  Everyone always said that she is such a strong alpha mare and is just trying to test me.  She is now retired at the tender age of 8.

My mom worked with a lady in a wheelchair who had a horse rear and fall over on her, I won't have one, I can handle bucking and crow hopping but NOT rearing, it is just far too dangerous. I had a beautiful steel grey son of Mr. Eye Opener that I practically gave away due to him rearing. I hope you can find the trigger and I hope you don't get hurt in the process.
