Bit questions
I'm Really Boring
Posts: 4505
I just bought a horse that was warmed up in a chain mouth O-ring, a Jr Cowhorse, or a gag bit
(she said she just put him in whichever one she had with her
). He has a bit that he runs well in, but I've been warming him up in a Wright medium shank bit with a chain mouth and it's not working well. He tends to get his head up high and wants to brace against the bit. I am working on that
(I know it is partly a training issue
) but I know I need to change the bit too. I am looking at a Loomis gag and a Goosetree simplicity. Based on what he was warmed up in before and his wanting to raise his head and not listen, which would you suggest? Or a different route altogether? Thank you.

why can't you use the bit that he runs in, especially if he likes it? Or just go simple and use an o'ring snaffle.

Does he do this with the bit he runs in? I have always just use the bit that I ran my horse in to warm up.

Same here. I'm not co-ordinated enough to keep up with different bits and headstalls... I also have to stand on my trailer to reach my horses head...Short woman probs...

I have also always used the same bit to warm-up and run.
I would stick with a bit he is use to and listens to. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Having grown up with a Mom who trained All Around horses, I get "event specific" tack. This horse has been taught that when it's competition bridle goes on, it is Game On! My question is... Why not use a Jr Cowhorse, or one of the other bits that the previous owner used to warm him up in?
