Location: IL | So has anyone dealt with a aggressive horse? My barrel horse is 14 yr old gelding and he is super aggressive to our new mare. I'm talking if I left him with her he'd kill her. He ended up driving her thru the electric fence. He pins his ears bearing his teeth and goes after her. He was also like this with our mini and I just chalked it up to her being a little horse and couldn't fight back. He is fine with our other 2 and he had been in the pen with other horses and he was good. He is the top guy in the pasture though. It's very frustrating. Any advice?? I have in a pen by himself right now. |

| Only thing you can do is keep them separated. I have a gelding who I have to be really careful with, because he'll kill another horse if you let him. He was proud cut at 10 years old though, so he still has the aggressive stallion mentality around some mares and most geldings. I've only found 1 gelding I could keep him with, then he loved my mare, so they were inseparable, but no one else could be with them. |

I have owned him for 6 years now and when I got him I never had issues like this. In the last couple years I've noticed this. We have had a couple horse come and go thru our barn and this is now the 3rd horse he has had a problem with. He was gelded young. He was always top dog until we got another mare 2 years ago and she was leader. We have since sold her and replaced her with this other mare and all I can say is WOW. He is a super sweet horse with me and my daughters, you would never think he would be this way. He was dx with ulcers last year, but he's been treated and on a supplement now for that. I didn't know if that could be part of the reason. As far as I know he doesn't have stomach issues now. |

| If this is a new thing, he may have a Tumor on his adrenal gland causing excess testosterone to be produced. There is a specific testing procedure for this.
I have had a few geldings get really aggressive that didn't have a Tumor. It all started when they became the top dog, the injuries on my horses went up ten fold, it got to the point I was frustrated.
I sold the geldings, my injuries went down, and the people who own them say they are not aggressive. |

| my 23 year old (retired) is like this and always has been. i just bought a darn nice 7 year old a few weeks ago. i'm talking like this horse has the ability to take me places i never thought i'd get. well old horse ran him through our fence (thankfully the corner post was old and snapped and the fence just kinda fell out the way) but didn't hurt him thank God! i caught my new horse and checked him out then went and rode like we were planning to do anyway. the next day we thought we'd give it another try (these were both on weekends so we were there watching). old horse ended up chasing new horse around so fast that new horse slipped (wet grass) and broadsided. thankfully again he wasn't hurt but i had enough. old horse now stays stalled up unless i decide to turn him out separately. aint no way i'm taking a chance on getting my new nice horse hurt just because old horse wants to be a jerk. it's not like new horse was fighting him or even taunting him. new horse just wanted to mind his own business! hopefully we will eventually separate my pasture to make 2 but for now this is my only option.

Location: IL | My gelding is seperated now, because there would be a dead horse not just injuries! I swear it's like watching the National geographic channel. He is out to mortally wound this mare, he was also this way with our mini and another gelding that we sold. I love this horse and selling is not an option. He is a great barrel horse. I will just have to make permanent arrangements to keep him away from this new mare. Funny thing is he is fine with my other mare and gelding. I mean he's the top dog but he doesn't try to hurt them??? I'm baffled by his temperment. |

Location: Texas | I haven't ever had a gelding act that way but we've had two mares that were straight b*****. They didn't like other horses or people. We constantly had to keep them separated.

Location: Where the pavement ends and the West begins Utah | I have four aggressive horses on any given day they rotate on who is the boss. The interesting thing is I never see my gelding chase any of them. He eats where ever he wants to and just flattens his ears and nobody moves . He is in with 3 mares. I did have a friends horse stay here he was a total jerk. He would chase to no end so I change the pecking order by feeding him last he kind of deflated his pride at being boss. |

Location: California | We have a gelding that we have owned since he was 4 months old, he's 7yrs old this year. He used to be the most submissive horse of our heard. He is now very aggressive towards anybody except my mom half draft gelding who is boss, he does test the big guy but since he's little the half draft wins out.
My mare is not friendly to other horses but has calmed doqn through the years. They have been penned together through the years and do fine. Recently we had them together and the littlw gelding had her pinned in a corner kicking the living tar out of her. I ran in with a whip and we now have to keep him seperated from everyone but the half draft gelding. |
