What factors do you take in to consideration when determing the value when insuring a foal - stud fee, dam's value, ??  We're breeding for the first time ever this year and planning on insuring the foal and getting major medical.  Also, do you/can you insure your broodmares when in foal?  She isn't a performer, only a broodmare now.

I got my pro foal policy through Plains Horizon with Marvin Tavarez. He was very helpful and can answer all of your questions. We had to use our policies twice due to sick foals that passed away. They were excellent to work with, and paid our claim as soon as the vet paperwork was submitted. I would definitely recommend using them for this type of policy.

I had my colt insured last year for mortality. Wish I would've had major medical - he ended up having to have surgery. BUT was able to get a huge chunk of it covered as the mortality policy I have included emergency surgery coverage. This is the first baby I had insured because his value was higher than the others I had.

I have had my broodmares insured - but it was only because I bought them from far away and had to have them hauled and mostly wanted it to cover the long haul. After the year was up on those policies, I did not renew.

I have 1 broodmare insured right not but I am leasing her from a friend, so I want to make sure I am covered should something happen. And I will have her in utero baby insured because of the value and not having a LFG. But I usually do not do that.

Ditto I have all my horses insured through Plains Horizon and had my ICSI Dash For Perks foals in utero insured with them also. One died before being delivered and they paid right away on it. Great company!
