Which one do you commonly use for slow work and tuning?  (Not colt starting).  Smooth or twisted wire?  Trying to build up my bit collection and can't decide what to get first!  Just curious what you commonly reach for.

I use a loose ring and a d-ring smooth mouth most often...what I find is with a d-ring they start to lean on that quicker because it is fixed, where a loose ring isn't. Occasionally I use a twisted wire mouth to get one back to listening.

Buy the 5 inch smooth mouth with copper bars off set O-ring bit sold now by Clinton Anderson ... he bought the patent from my old bit maker. Learn how to use it by lifting up on single reins with soft hands and use your fingers only and also also what a butterfly flutter is using your little finger ... (learn to use it with split reins)
When setting up headstall... just ask for a half wrinkle at the corners of the mouth.
And I will shoot you if I see you trying to use a curb chain with it .... a bit hobble is Ok.

This is one of those riders and horses can use for a life time ... so buy the 45$ one instead of the $12.95 one ... lol

Once you stop pulling, jerking, pulling straight back or pulling with both hands and thinking you are gonna teach horse to neck rein at a dead run .... you will do fine !!

I use a smooth mouth 3 piece Dutyon loose ring snaffle. I use this bit on my 12 year old horse. I absolutely will not use a square mouth piece, it just looks like the edges would dig into their bars.

Smooth mouth double jointed D ring is my go to. I don't like twisted wires for every day. Once in a while if they start to get heavy maybe, but just a smooth mouth for most of the time. If a certain horse prefers a single joint and/or an O-ring for some reason then I'll use those too.

That is my goal. I need to get him flexing on the ground with just a rope halter first. I know he can flex real easy too, because he can touch the top of his flank for a carrot. :P love hearing the suggestions and your whys and why nots. Keep 'em coming.

Flexing is for teaching a horse a one rein stop if he thinks about bucking or keep a nervous horse busy if waiting in line. Flexing the nose to his ribs or your toe will end up making him a rubber necked horse.... turning his head but not his front end.

When riding a horse you want him to keep his head inside the points of his shoulders and lead with his head and the front feet to follow. Also.. no rollbacks .. this requires a stop and a pivot which costs time at a barrel. You want your horse to maintain his momentum with his feet up under him and moving.

Make your horse smooth at side passing and diagonal two tracking..... which they do at high speed turning a barrel.
Training leads and maintaining momentum while loping circles .. do a 180 and change directions or a 360 and continue going the same direction. Keeping his feet under him should be a turnaround and not a stop and wait then pivot roll back.
NEXT.. work on your flying lead changes after horse stays correct with right and left leads. Rider needs to be the pilot with correct hand and leg cues even if horse is a natural lead changer... rider doesn't worry or nag horse to change as long as it changes when it rates a barrel ..

I did a quick "watch this" about this video ... this is a planned training session that is used over and over again as a training routine so horse will get familiar with the good basic barrel moves and make them habits because the rider had a consistent order of training and down to cooling a horse off and taking its mind off of running .. Take the time to jot down what moves the video contains and the order. The order sometimes is there so the horse can catch some air before moving on to a faster part of the session.

This is the best training video I have ever seen to teach a young horse or to refresh an old horse the correct basic moves needed in barrel racing. It also teaches the rider to ride with a training plan, focus, momentum and rhythm with no nagging or ragging on the horse for any minor mistakes. The next training session will correct a rider error or uncertain moves by the horse!!

Do not confuse the turnarounds while keeping the horses feet up under themselves and moving while using your momentum to leave in the correct lead.... this is NOT A ROLLBACK ...

Use a little more speed while teaching flying lead changes after the horse is side passing and holding their correct leads in circles and know what to do with your hands and feet simultaneously!!

HAVE FUN WITH THIS IN AN ARENA OR PASTURE RIDING .. AND NO NAGGING OR RAGGING ON THE HORSE ...

AND THANKS TO BECKY AMIO AND MERRILL RANCH FOR SHARING THIS SUPER TRAINING VIDEO ... watch Becky intently .. she has quick sneaky hands and feet.. lol
