Fat supplements & weight gain---interesting observation

I suspected one of my horse could have PSSM. He's 1200 pounds, 15 hands a and gets 4 pounds of Strategy, 2 pounds of alfalfa cubes, mix grass hay, and ONE cup of rice bran/flax mix. He's always been an easier keeper. Because I suspected the PSSM, I decided to up the fat - rice bran/flax. I went from feeding ONE cup per day to THREE cups per day--he's been on it for 3 months and although he's getting 3 times the fat he was, he's not gained. ......which confirms for me that supplements don't do the work for weight. It's good roughage and feed that does. On a side note, I have seen a very noticeable improvement in his attitude and fluidity and less "popping" . So, I might have been correct about the PSSM.

Weight gain comes from digesting more calories than they are burning. It is as simple as that. Feeding something to a horse does not mean that their system is properly digesting it. The added fat provided has more than twice the calories that the same volume of protein or starch. Stabilized rice bran is about 20% fat, 15% protein, 13% starches and 7% sugars. So, adding 3 cups of whatever's size provides about 3/4 cup of fat. I would not expect fast noticeable weight gain from that. I would expect that additude improvement and focus. In the long term, you should see better muscle definition because of the gamma oryzanol present. If you adjust down the feed to remove a starch disruption in the digestive system while raising the fat level, you should see added condition from that if all else is functioning properly. But, still, it is about more calories fed than burned, but only if properly digested.
