What is the latist birth date you would consider when buying a foal with preformance intentions and aged event shows / races goals?

A lot of people up north don't even try and foal early.  I'd say July

Race track probably April. Barrel racing I am good with June. But I am from WY and all our babies are born in May.

I'm not hardcore into the futurities but I have two April yearlings that I am not concerned about at all when it comes time for that. May would be the latest I would want I think. But after that 4 or 5 year old year I really don't think it means much.

Since it is 5 yr old futurities around me, birth date doesn't come into consideration, I am more focused on bloodlines and conformation

It wouldn't matter to me what month the foal was born in unless you are thinking of halter classes or race track. If the horse fits your criteria for conformation, temperament, bloodlines, size, etc. a few months is not going to make any difference.

Thank you for the responses.
My mares keep not foaling lol. I was just woundering when the cut off would be to not breed them and try next spring eariler. These foals will be for sale, so everbodys opinionon this really matters to me.
Thanks again.

It just depends on your area and other factors.. like, if it's a baby that is worth it and you just have to have it, I would try all breeding season to get it done. I don't want babies born after April at my house, so we stop trying by the end of May.

Most of our racehorse foals at the barn I work at are born in February to April, and we have TBs and QHs. We have a lot of TB mare due right now, in fact I think 5 of our 9 foaling stalls have TBs in them right now. haha

I am a firm believer in not leaving broodmares open. Yes, sometimes they do come up open in the fall but I always try to get them bred back no matter what time of the year. That is their job, to have foals...........now don't anybody get upset but the bottom line is, an open broodmare is costing money and not producing any potential income. This applies to responsible breeders with horses that are worthy of being breeding stock.
