SaraJean - 2015-04-21 10:00 AM  Underrun heels are typically a farrier or lack of maintenance caused problem. Some will say they are genetic, I'm not sold on that theory. You need a very good farrier to correct them & trim/shoe regularily. Wedges can be very helpful if used correctly short term but I do not agree with them being used for the life of the horse as they will just keep crushing the heel further. My preferred way of handling them is by keeping the horse barefoot & rasping the foot about every 2 weeks. I pull the heel back to the back of the frog & keep a strong bevel on the toe.

I disagree with the highlighted part.

Wedging a horse long-term does not cause crushed heels, so long as your farrier knows what they are doing.

My Red has been in wedges for 3 years and his heels look fantastic. But, I do also take him in every 5 weeks on the nose.

As far as the OP's question: I agree that you should have x-rays done. As long as the "internal parts" look good, and there isn't a conformational defect, a GOOD farrier should be able to easily correct the heels over time.

What is the reason on why he is in a wedge?
