My horses are falling apart, :( After getting home from a long vet appointment, where I found out my barrel horse's tendon injury requires a YEAR off, I found more bad news. One of my geldings was breathing fast, and has heaves. I am experienced with heaves, and it wasn't horrible, but his rib cage was really lifting with every breath. I noticed with every breath it sounded like there was a "catch" like almost a grunt, like he has mucus somewhere, and then every 5-10 min he'd go into a coughing fit like couch 8-15 times, it sounded terrible. This may be unrelated but he nipped at his side when he was untied, right after a coughing fit. He's had a bit of a cough all winter, maybe coughing twice while riding him, and that's it. The vet said there was nothing majorly weigh and he might have mild allergies and we didn't need to do anything. I don't know how serious this is now, should I rush to the vet, or just water down his hay, we also have some left over Dex I could give him, anybody have experience with this kind of thing?

Unless he has a wad stuck in his throat and cheeks. He has severe case of heaves.

I would be going to the vet having a bronchio lavage done to collect a culture send it off

This to me is very serious, I have one mare who never even gave me a warning she was sick till she had a coughing fit that took her down to her knees (smoke from forest fires)

Hauled her to the vet where she had her lungs flushed 5 times in 2 months Iv antibiotics and 6 months later I still haven't got the go ahead to ride.

The vet needs to do a bronchial scope, not all vets can do this, as this will show how much mucus is in the lungs
