Location: Alabama | I have a horse with a meniscal tear. I'm told surgery is necessary to repair it. Everyone that I know who has/had a horse with this same diagnosis, has turned the horse out for a year and let it heal on it's own. Would like to hear from other's who have opted for the surgery, and also from those who allowed to heal on it's own. I'm in no hurry, I just want to do what's best for the longevity of my horse. Surgery scares me, but if it's absolutely necessary then that's what we will do.
Please comment with your experience in this. I need to hear from people like myself, not just doctors. |

Location: Opelousas, LA | We have a broodmare here with a meniscal tear, she is pretty dang crippled, has to be kept on Previcox. She ran out about $165,000 on the track and wrecked her stifle in a gate work when she was 4 yrs old. The options at the time were to do surgery with a 50/50 chance of her coming back sound enough to run, or turn her out and breed her. We turned her out but in hindsight it would have been much better to at least attempt to repair her stifle. Wish I had a crystal ball, I had no idea she would never heal and be so sore, guess the vets didn't either.
Hope yours isn't that bad, this mare never took a sound step after she left the gates that day, we baby her and she is the queen of the farm but I still feel bad for not fixing her.

Location: Alabama | I decided to go ahead with the surgery. She's just 6 and has had something going on in that stifle for several years now, however it never seemed to hinder her in anyway until now. Praying we find the source of the problem and can fix it. Will more than likely go in a month after the surgery and do stem cells. Prayers for a successful surgery and recovery would be greatly appreciated!! |

I hate to hear that she never healed. That's what I fear in not doing the surgery now. The odds are in my mare's favor as she's young, healthy, and has a lot of heart. The hardest part of all of this will be the confinement I believe. I'm dreading that already. |
