Ok so I have a filly that just turned a year old at the end of March. She leads, ties, stands for the farrier, loads, hauls.....you know, all the basics. Other than some minor patience issues, she does all these things fairly well. I have a good friend that has raised several nice horses and I highly respect respect her opinion on anything horse related. She seems to think that by this age they should have been saddled already. My filly isnt very big yet. I taped her at 13.1 last week. Im just not sure if she is mentally or physically ready to have a saddle thrown on her. Thoughts? What do you guys expect from your yearlings? |

| For them to be horses lol they know everything your filly does and they are turned out on good pasture ! They get brought in every so often for tying lessons. |

See, this is how I think as well. She gets taken out of the pasture 2-3 times a week to be tied along with some basic ground work in between. I've also started ponying her around when I ride. I just figured I would teach her all the basics of being a functional horse and then let her be (so to speak) until her 2 year old year. Thats normal right? |

| Yep mine get kicked out until they are 3yo then sent to a reining trainer and they have turned out just fine and SOUND lol |

Yes, that is very normal, at least to me it is. We don't put a saddle on their backs until they are 2 years old, when we break them to ride. When they are 3 they go to a cutting or reining trainer (whichever they need more dedicated time with) for 60-90 days, then back home to work. |

First off... has anyones 2 year old ever measured that small? What did yours top at it? She is a first baby, dam was 14.3h, Sire is 15 or 15.1 I believe?
And... I was considering sending her to a reining or cutting trainer at 3 years old or at least the spring of next year (she turns 3 next March) opposed to this summer since she is still so tiny!
Thoughts from those who have raised and sent their babies to trainers?
She halters, leads, ties, trailers... I think Im gonna start ponying her. She is kinda lazy! Lol! Go figure my futurity prospect would be :P She is very friendly and turned out in pasture with mares so she has her horse manners!
I don't plan on running her till her 5 year old year cause I want to take her super slow and correct! :) |

Location: Tennessee | I saddle them as yearlings with a synthetic saddle that weighs arounds 15 - 20 lbs. They will also lunge, flex & ground drive at this age. I like to start them on things young because it's usually a lot less scary to them the younger they are. I also will pony them on trails by the time they're weaned to see the sights. The horse's I've done this way have always had a genuine "want" to ride because they were raised with it. |

Location: Smack in the middle of WA! | Mine leads, hauls, picks up his feet and just is nice to be around! He is kicked out on pasture right down the road from me. I drive past him at least twice a day and stop at least once a week and go out and check on him. That will pretty much be it until the end of summer. I prefer to let them grow up before doing to much with them  |

Location: Kansas | My yearling lunges, stands tied, bathes, loads, takes wormer, etc. I was given this filly on one condition to help a friend sell the other filly she has for twice what she was wanting....got it done so this girl is mine. She tapes out at 12.3hh, and will stand over 16hh when she is mature.

Mine 2yo isn't very tall either, so I will probably hold off on breaking her til she's 3. I have saddled her several times, & need to do more with her!! |
