So I noticed he got these around the same time last year. He also had them in december, but they were harder and I'm pretty sure it was just swelling from teeth coming in and pushing out baby teeth ( at the time in dec he had loose babyteeth)

Anyways. He's developed the knots again. There's 3, and their slightly squish, maybe as big around as a half dollar and about an inch in thickness it seems like. I've heard several answers, and last year the vet said they were swollen lympnodes ( sp? )

So couple things: do you think that sounds like just swollen nodes? If so do they recoccur around the same time every year for certain horses? What causes it?? Is there something I can maybe give him to lower swelling or should I just ignore it?

Also, I did notice he has a slight running nose.

=) Just need some input! Thanks ladies

I would call a vet and ask for their opinion. Sounds like he's got a bit of a bug.

Yea, I'm going to do that. He's supposed to be out there today and I should be getting a progress report from the barn owner soon.

I just thought I'd get some input. The people on this board have been very helpful to me with stuff like this. It seems like allergies, was wondering what some ppl do to counter act that for horses?? The vet is gonna reaffirm/confirm it for me, or tell me what it is if its something else. I just don't like ignoring anything, because theres sooo much out there for horses and ppl now to get. lol

How long has he had them? I would think he had a bug, maybe distemper. Could be just a cold. Or he might have a tooth infection or guttaral pouch infection.

Distemper is usually a fall time illness but it doesn't mean it can only occur in the fall. If he is not sick other than the swollen glands and reoccurs every year I wouldn't think it was distemper anyway.

If it is in fact the lymph nodes and they swell around the same time(s) every year, maybe he has allergies. My sister has a gelding that does this when the cottonwood trees drop their cotton.

Allergies were my first thought too...both my mare and gelding have runny noses right now (and did before I took him to the trainer's), but it is SOOO dusty (we need rain badly) I'm thinking it is allergies, because they act good otherwise.  Sometimes horses pick up a little cold, too, like humans do.

Dental cysts will not be in the throat latch area. They will be on the bone of the mandible on each side. about six inches above the chin.
I would think he is some lymph nodes enlarged

So the last I board with thinks it's just nodes. Or possibly teeth. He had been losing baby teeth still. He still has his wolf teeth ( he's my first baby, I've never had to had then removed before) so were going to have the dentist take a look at his teeth next Tuesday. She thinks it's a little of both. There are two knots further back and one further up that's squishier
