I got a Reinsman Stop & Turn hackamore with 6 1/4" shanks from a garage sale, never used, for five bucks. At that price, I grabbed it. A girl can't have enough bits. What can you tell me about this bit? Reinsman's catalog describes it as "severe."

I would do a search for it on Barrel Horse News, there was a really great article in the magazine a long while back. They are "severe" in the fact that they are probably misused VERY often. They are used on a particular style of horse, by a particular style of rider, for a very particular reason - none of which I know.

Best of luck.

If I'm remembering correctly diann guinn (BB on here I can't remember her name, think it's dianeguinn) uses them a lot and is a great resource for explaining.

ETA: or maybe it was a fast stop

The Stop n Turn can indeed be very severe if misused, as can any piece of headgear. If a horse is properly broke to it, a rider is properly educated and the hack is properly adjusted, it can be a very good piece of equipment that allows a rider a great amount of feel with very minimal interaction. Many horses and people who use an Easy Stop/Quick Stop/ Fast Stop will also use a Stop n Turn for some horses, although they are very different pieces of equipment.

People confuse a Stop n Turn with a Quick Stop.  What I've seen Diane's pictures is a Quick Stop.

Stop N turn just doesn't have as much as a quick stop. Either way with these hacks you must be someone who really stays out of a horses way and lets them work around the turn. Not hanging on them for balance or trying to handle them during the turn.

I second that. I don't have the horse I rode with it any more, but that dude was so fun to ride because he was so broke to the quick stop. Loved working cows with that big guy.

stop n turn is like a jim warner hackamore in feel. i love them. nothing like a quick stop though. wear them low and loose, almost hanging. bar in the back should not touch the chin and nose should be loose fitting not tight

Thanks guys. I'm just going to put it in my box and if I think I ever need to use it on someone, I'll get WrapNSnap's help!
