Okay, here is a question for those knowledgable. First bit is the Charmayne James Ryan Gag, second is the short shank diamond series Sherry Cervi bit (I'll included links to the picture. To me, they look like they should have essentially the same type of action, with slightly more gag on the Ryan bit, but you tell me. And, of the two, which do you like better? I have an opportunity to buy either or both used, but before I did I wanted to ask.  Do I need them? No, not right now, but I might in the future and if I can get them for a good buy it would save me some money in the future. :) Thanks!

No the bits are different

The Ryan gag has more gag action and the ratio looks to be a 2:1 purchase : shank ratio at neutral position where as the cervi diamond lifter is a 1:1 ratio and only has about an 1" gag

Also the diamond lifter is twice as heavy

Thanks very much! Which one do you use on what type of horse? Or which do you consider a more versatile bit? Or a lighter bit? The 1:1 would seem to be a slightly lighter and more direct to me, but the weight would also cause you to be more careful how you use it, IMO. I rode with a weighted snaffle bit recently, and it got a quicker response over all, but not my favorite feel as I feel a weighted bit could be way too harsh in the wrong hands.

These types of bits actally give you almost to no gag action .... you are not going to jerk
that bit up 3-4 inches to get into gag mode ..
The power from these type of bits is how tight your curb chain is and if you have heavy or soft hands.

Look at the length of the purchase above the bit which will allow more pressure on
the poll and the short shank gives you less ratio to your hand pressure ..
with the short shank you can have heavier hands ..

I would choose the Cervi bit since it is the better made bit and comes complete
with cheek guards to prevent the end of the mouth piece from pinching the
corners of your horses mouth .. although they can create tenderness
This bit is even length on purchase and shank and allows you to balance your
hand strength with other bits you use ..

I actually use both of these on my gelding. The cervi seems to have more lift and would say my gelding it more respectful to it. I don't know if that's just him or if it is mechanically "harsher."

I don't need either bit, but if I could get a good deal on them, I can see having a purpose for them in the future. I'm not really keen on a lot of gag, but I also don't like a lot of weight to my bits either. My mare, right now, would be the only one I would attempt trying one on...she gets a little pushy in a snaffle, but overall I like riding her in one.
