Location: midwest mama | So I have a gelding that has fairly wide shoulders, and I bought a new saddle with a full quarter horse tree which fits him wonderfully.
Here's the problem - I'm only 5'1" and when I ride my horse in this saddle I feel like my legs are spread so wide I'm being torn in two, like a wishbone! Reminds me of one of my old western pleasure saddles.
When I have ridden my horse in other saddles, I haven't felt this way - I've had much closer contact. Of course those saddles are too narrow for him.
Anyone else had this problem? Is there anything I can do? Besides grow 6" taller or get a narrower horse? LOL |

I had an older used josey semi bars, rode narrow in
the seat and thighs,felt like I was riding a 2x4 even on a wide backed horse.
Bought a newer one, same semi tree, the seat is flatter, I didn't feel close
and I felt the same way(like a wish bone) but once the leather conformed and
the saddle shaped to the horse. It felt better.
Plus I got used to the flatter seat, which now I prefer!
I still have an old josey I ride in and hate it now!

What brand is your saddle? There is wider saddle's with a narrower twist to them, But I do know what you mean and its not a good feeling I rode in a few saddles like what you have and I would pop up and could not hold my seat. Im 5'7 with long legs but can not ride in a wide twist of a saddle. |

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | Some saddles do that to me too and I won't be able to walk when I get off my horse. There are saddles out there that fit a wide horse and don't hurt, you need to keep looking. |

| I agree that you need to keep looking. I would get a hold of Meleeta Brown. She would be able to help you whether her saddles would work for you or not. She also has a demo program. There are others too, but , she is the only one I tried. |

I'm not talking about the tree. I am talking about the skirt
and the leather around the jockeys, finders and cinch rings,
they do indeed eventually shape to the horse and your legs.
As good quality supple leather should.
I do agree with you southern ponygirl that flare in her bar angles are prob wider than what she had.

Location: midwest mama | The saddle is a Gerald Bethune Bear Trap saddle made by A1 Saddlery.
I have ridden in a bear trap for years and feel more secure in them, but the old one I had was a semi QH tree and it pinched my horse in the scapulas (shoulders) really bad, so I thought getting this one on a full QH tree would work. It fits my horse well, but feels WAY too wide for me. It's okay (sort of) riding around in it, but I can't grip with my thighs very well so I think it's going to be a problem when I start to go fast.
The quality is decent, so I don't think there is a problem with the saddle itself......but I feel like a little kid riding a barrel. :( |

Location: Adopt a homeless pet - www.petfinder.com! | I prefer a narrow twist in my saddles as well. I have a 95 model Josey Paywindow (not the Ulitmate) and I LOVE it. Doesn't fit my current horse though so I ordered a Double J Intimidator with their standard Double J Pro tree and I like it so far.

| COW PIE gave you the answer and it goes for men too ...
A good saddle maker will ask your weight and height even on the phone to get a judge on how fat your thighs are going to be ..
He will raise the center line of the seat enough to fit snug up in your crotch which will raise your pelvic bone enough to drop your legs. A lot of them will also curve the swells for thigh fit too.
Now if your last name is Kardashion ... that is a whole different set of SITTING PROBLEMS ... lol
You can test this out by rolling a medium and then a large bath towel very tight and sticking one end in the gullet and other end to the cantle, mount your horse and position each of the towels to fit in your crack. Depending on how deep and wide your crotch is .. you may have to combine a couple of towels to really get the feel that you are sucked down into that center line of the saddle ... so roll those towels tightly...
