| My friend just bought a really nice mare, but she's 15 and she creaks and pops in her joints. Doesn't really seem to effect her, but we want to make sure that it doesn't start effecting her.
She plans on doing a feed through, but wants to give her a boost with an injectable (IV) joint supplement. I personally have never used one, so I know next to nothing about them. Another friend who's working with her suggested the Legend shot. Doing her own personal research, she found Pentosan. What are your suggestions for IV joint supplements that might assist in boosting the mare's comfort? Or What can you tell me about each of these 2 injectables?

With that being said, Legend is a short term used usually by people the weekend they are running. Adequan/Pentosan/Pentaussie are long term that being with a loading dose. I believe Adequan may not require monthly maintenance shots anymore but the others do. Someone can correct me on that. I, personally, like using these instead of feed through because I know they are getting what they should. |

| Legend is in and out of the system in 48 hours tops. Use on race day pretty much, not as a supplement. Pentosan or adequan are great for long term care. |

Agree with Pentosan or Adquan. The vets at OSU told me that they don't see any difference when using Adequan or Polyglycan and the Polyglycan is much cheaper than the Adequan. I did the loading doses with Adequan and then switched everyone to the Polyglycan once a month, when they told me they saw little to no difference.

One of my vets told me he didn't think the Adequan was worth the money - and usually I get BLASTED when I mention this. |

How much are y'all paying for Adequan vs Poly? Cause from Valley Vet, 1 dose of Adequan is $46 vs 1 dose of Poly $43.50 Not much difference there... My vet prescribed Poly @ 5ml per dose, maybe you are giving less?? |

| The difference is, Adequan needs to be given in a 7 shot series for about 300.00 give or take. Poly is 84.00 for a 2 dose bottle. So 42.00 a month vs having to come up with 300 in one month. |

You can give Poly IM, IV, or IA!
Ah, I see. My vet prescribed it same dosage as Adequan, so I did the loading series too. |

Location: Phoenix | We've had great success with Adaquan on a 19-25 year old horse. Felt like he was 6. I'm considering going the Pentosan route because it's cheaper, and seems very well liked. Pentosan isn't FDA approved in the US though. I also heard that Adequan is just as effective doing the loading dose 2x a year vs. loading and monthly. |

Location: Northwest | Pentosan Gold is very reasonably priced and I have had super amazing results giving it to my 20 year old. It is given IM. BTW... I always kind of scoffed a bit when people on here talked about what a waste of money feed through joint supplements were compared to injectable, well they were right. I was spending tons of $ on Cosequin ASU Plus (Lubrisyn before that, Tight Joints Plus before that) and it didn't even make a fraction of the difference that the Pentosan Gold did (Not saying the feed throughs don't work, they just didn't work AS WELL for me). After the loading dose my horse went from 3d/4d to 2d. |

Location: Wisconsin | I get an injectable glucasomine supplement from my vet. It is very easy to give--IM and very reasonable. It costs a lot less than the feed supplements and it is a lot more effective. |

Location: Michigan | Pentosan Gold also contains glucasomine.
Pentosan Platinum adds Hyalronic Acid.
I do the loading dose with the Gold and then hit mine every 3 weeks with the Platinum.
Much better results than any of the many feed throughs I have tried in the past.
