We are heading up to SD in a couple weeks for a few days of R and R. We will be there 4 days. Flying into Rapid City and staying in Rapid City at the Hotel Alex Johnson. Supposedly it's haunted?

We plan to spend a day at Mt Rushmore or most of a day anyway and touring Keystone. Although I understand it doesn't take long to visit all of Keystone. And a day in the Badlands.

Any other must sees?

the southern hills have not only Mt Rushmore and Keystone but also Custer and the State Park, Hot Springs, Needles Highway.  THere's a million things to do.  The Northern hills have Roughlock Falls, Deadwood/Lead, my mind went blank.  IMO you don't want to spend an entire day at Rushmore, part of a day and travel on.  Lots of beautiful country to see especially since its been raining and things are green.

The 8th floor of the Alex Johnson is haunted, The Bullock Hotel in Deadwood is patrolled by the ghost of Seth Bullock. Mt. Moriah cemetery in Deadwood is very interesting. If you go South to Custer State park Wind Cave is very cool and Crazy zHorse monument. All kinds of things to do!!

The lighting ceremony at mt Rushmore is very good but do is the the laser show at crazy horse, which is at dark. Ride the steam engine at keystone. If love a good chicken fried steak, the Bumping Buffalo at hill city I think. If you see a Purple Pie Place stop!!! Awesome homemade pies! One of the caves, needles highway(the scenery is beautiful. Deadwood the shoot out of jack McCall in the afternoon at the saloon. Love the black hills, just sad that we can't afford to take our horses there this year.

Riding the Black Hills is my very favorite thing to do. Hiking is fun to!! Hill City has the wineries and breweries that are neat plus the Brule show is very unique, Rapid City has a cool downtown area, Custer is fun, Needles is the prettiest drive out there  - you shouldn't hurt for stuff to do! I like getting off the beaten path and just taking time to breathe :)

The Alex Johnson is right in downtown Rapid and has cool shops and Main Street Square where they have concerts and events going on most nights. Reptile Gardens and Bear Country USA are on your way from Rapid to Mount Rushmore. Chubby Chipmunk Chocolates are in the lobby of your hotel and they are delicious. Check out the new state tourism site: www.TravelSouthDakota.com. You can view the online vacation guide for more ideas too.

Thank you all for this info. That's awesome. We obviously won't have time to do it all but there's some great ideas here.
