I feel like this will be more like a...vent than anything but I just feel bad for them and don't know what to do for them. There are 11(?) pens all in a row facing my barn. When I got there on Sunday the gate to the pen between my 2 was destroyed and another was bent up pretty good. I found out 2 horses, a little yearling and a big ranch horse had gotten scared and attempted to jump their gates. They were found grazing in the yard so didn't get too far. Today I noticed one of my horse's gates was bent like he ran into it, but didn't jump it. Both of them have had very little appetite the last 2 days. There are security cameras pointed towards that area but the creepy thing is nothing is showing up on them. Some people thought it was a mountain lion, some cyotees (I said bigfoot....) Whatever it was evidently hasn't tried to hurt them but is scaring the crap out of them. I don't know what to do.

Oh wow, hope your cameras catch a picture of whatever it is.   Have you looked for tracks?

Depending on where you live it could be anything, in my area I have cougars, had one in panels right by the house, and he did the same thing, tried to jump the panel.

2 years later same area approx 100 feet from the house a cougar killed my donkey

2 weeks before that 100 feet in a different direction something killed a deer, drug it 300 feet then the entire body vanished, hunters told us this was the work of a cougar.

Had one horse on another occasion end up at the neighbours 1/4 mile away, one horse separated from her sister, and 10 other horses, never happens.

Occasionally we can see cougar tracks, or even them.

I don't even live in the mountains, just in foothill country.

They don't always attack, but can make a horse go crazy even when passing through

It's been too dry to see any tracks unfortunately. Hadn't thought of the coon. I live in the rolling plains of ND but we have had periodic mountain lion sightings in the area. I would have thought that if it was a big cat they'd have made a meal of the yearling that climbed the gate. He was kinda sore and stiff from it so hasn't been moving too fast.

I had one pen on my place that every now and then the horse in it would go nuts . We finally decided it was an electrical current coming from out barn or fencer and when conditions we right the horses were getting shocked. We had it fixed and haven't had a problem since. We have big cats come through all the time along with various other things like wolves and unless it is actually after them they rarely react to them. It could be something on the roof though that would scare them. Hope you figure it out.

The owner of the facility would probably know about the electricity. I have no idea. Other than that, it's a good thing they're all used to gun shots going off on the regular lol.

Wow. I hope you find out what it is before one of them hurt themselves. Might check for bear sign too. Alot of horses don't handle the SMELL of bears, cougars or even pigs. So they might be far enough away that they aren't showing up on the game camera.

I'm happy to report everyone's appetites seem to be back to normal so they must be feeling better and the gate is replaced. Hopefully whatever was out there has moved on for good!

If it was a cougar, it will probably be back in 21 days, keep that in the back of your mind if they become flighty again.
