Location: Southern Oregon | The local barrel racing club that I help run is having some major issues. We have a race scheduled for sunday....temps are suppose to be triple digits.....this is OREGON, we don't get triple digits until august usually! We start early and it usually runs until 4pm or 5pm. That day all of the weather sites say it is suppose to be upper 70's in the morning and triple digits by early afternoon, with thunderstorms/lightning suspected throughout the morning and evening. HEAT ADVISORIES have been issued. A large number of the normal crowd want to reschedule and run two races in September to make up for it. The OTHER people are wanting the race to go on, just take out one class(which wont help much). I am stuck between a rock and hard place? We are use to mid 80's at the most in June, so what would you do? run it in the HEAT or take the HEAT and wait it out? |

Ditto. I use common sense logic. When I can barely breathe walking out of my house, temps are triple digits, and there are heat advisories, I just stay home. I don't need a heat stroke vet bill. |

Location: Montgomery TX | In the summers down here in Texas, the association I'm involved with has the shows in the evenings instead of during the day like in the winter, fall and spring. That might be an option. Although, if it's lightening and stuff, I'd be all for a re-schedule. Good Luck!! |

Location: Bandera, TX | Taking a class or two out of the lineup won't help much A horse that is not accustomed to heat and humidity could easily bleed on a single run and then you have all the issues with hydration...and possible tying up. Why do you think all us Texans come rodeo your direction this time of the year? |

Location: Pacific Northwest | Cancel...I wouldn't show up anyway. I'm in WA and we're having the same weather. It was 95 today and my work has no A/C, our district manager has been sending out emails advising we do absolute bare minimum - load peoples feed and go back inside, no projects.
I hate the heat, 80s are my max of what I can tolerate. |

Location: Montana | I don't even ride in this heat we've been having, let alone run in it. It isn't worth it to me, and my horses sure aren't minding it. They might get a little pudgy or out of shape, but it's not like I'm rodeoing consistently or something so I don't feel the need to risk anything until the weather is better. |

Location: Arkansas | I'm from Texas, now living in Arkansas and I smile a bit at this post as well. I understand that this is totally out of the norm for y'all, but that is the reason why most barrel races here start in the evening/ afternoon. Sure you'll be done late, but it's better than heat exhaustion and sunburns! Maybe ask the members of your association and get a vote going. Good luck!
