The mare I race has been on stall rest for the past week at the vet getting an iv treatment, but when I got her home yesterday, I noticed 4 very large bumps on her lower spine. A few weeks ago, we noticed one big bump there, so we switched saddle pads because we figured our impact gel had just finally given up. The bump went away and it only ever showed up after we rode her hard in the impact gel pad. So any ideas on what would cause 4 bumps to pop up after she had been on stall rest with no riding for a week?

When the muscles over the lumbar area atrophy- because of lack of exercise or illness, the lumbar spine becomes more visible.   When the horse is healthy and back to regular work, the dorsal spinous processes which protrude upwards from the lumbar vertebrae are hidden again by healthy muscle tissue.

I don't think that's what it is. She would get hand walked every day, but she's also in amazing shape.
